Getting personal information from someone who has experienced that part of life can be so important in keeping those memories, both good and not-so-good alive. In interviewing Mr. Leonard Bertuli, a United States Marine from Mark, IL, my partner Seth Carlson and I learned more about his life before entering military, his experiences while in the military, specifically during those taking place during the Vietnam war.…

This is the story of a fellow Vietnam War supporter who actually volunteered its entrance in war. This man named George Espinoza, but I call him Mr. Espinoza because he was one of the well know substitutes in my high school. He is aged 65 and works as a substitute for local high schools in the SAISD district. He was born in San Antonio and during the Vietnam war he worked for support services in Okinawa. During his time being stationed there, as was mentioned he was in Okinawa, and had refugees that were from Cambodia.…

The Vietnam War on American Soil The Vietnam War was a proxy war America fought from the 1950s to the 1970s. Through this time many Americans had changed their view on the war, going from pro-war to anti-war in just a matter of years. Many of these anti-war activists consisted of college students, but even some veterans soon decided against the war. Freedom, to me, is the ability to enjoy my life without living in constant fear. I can go to school, watch football, go to church, and do whatever else I truly want to do. We would not have this if we didn’t have our soldiers. They fight for us, and some even lay down their lives so that we can have freedom. One veteran in particular, who was very important to me, taught me the true meaning of freedom.…

Defining war is easy; it’s an event in which two forces oppose each other. However, defining the war experience is more difficult. The war experience focuses on individuals rather than the forces as a whole. In the documentary “Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam,” viewers hear from many soldiers about their experiences. Tim O’Brien has talked about his experiences in the 1999 President’s Lecture and in his novels.…

A sincere group of brothers, the Charlie Company was one of the latest combat infantry companies in the Vietnam War to be recruited, trained and sent to fight all together. The Vietnam conflict was a war whose backgrounds many did not understand and that resulted in the people questioning the guidelines of a government they had always depended on on. During the war in Vietnam, soldiers faced severe life-threatening situations, including fatigue, starvation, disease, and of course, having to see fellow friends and soldiers pass away. What made the 9th Division distinctive was that it was built from scratch in 1966 and for that reason had, at least at the beginning, men from all over the world. John Young just wanted to exploit and enlist in the army…

After the war in Vietnam there were hundreds of thousands, Vietnamese people leaving the country in the search of new place to live. Given the United States role in the conflict, America became obligated to admit them into the country. In total we took over 750,000 Vietnamese people into our country so they could start a new life. Today, we created the same type of war conflict as vietnam that caused thousands of people’s homes being destroyed. Like Vietnam, we should have to coalesce as a country to help the Syrians in need to find a new haven.…
