I’m privileged to write this letter of recommendation for my dear friend and former professor, James Newman. I was fortunate enough to have Mr. Newman as a world geography teacher during my freshmen year of high school. The first time I met him I had no idea that we would develop a long-lasting friendship, something that went further than the casual student-professor interactions. As a recent immigrant from Mexico, my first year in high school represented a big challenge as I struggled to adapt to the new culture and society. Nevertheless, it was Newman’s classroom where I finally felt confident and assertive of myself. Due to Newman’s extensive travel throughout the world I quickly developed a sense of connection between his story and mine.

Up to this day, I am extremely grateful of all the support I received from Newman during my final year of high school. The story goes like this: During one of the first weeks of senior year I approached Mr. Newman and told him about my desire to apply to some of the biggest colleges in the US. Although at first it seemed like an impossible dream to me, Newman gave me full support from the first moment I shared my ideas with him. He helped me during the whole college application process: writing essays, editing them, writing letters of recommendation, along other things. It was a long and tedious process, but it was knowing that Mr. Newman was present at every step along the way. At the end of the day, all of our combined effort became fruitful as letter of acceptance arrived from schools like Harvard, Stanford, and Yale. It was the great culmination to all of our hard work and support that was provided to me. I firmly believe that if it hadn’t been for Newman’s help, I wouldn’t be able to call Stanford my current home. Furthermore, he helped me to apply to various scholarships (such as Coca-Cola and Gates Millennium). Being the first one in my family to attend college, the path was difficult, but having someone who had been and experience the same things I was experiencing helped me ease the process and toughness of applying to
