Anecdotal note When I came in the classroom Haydin was coming out of circle time and into center time. I asked her if I could observe her in the writing center. She took a piece of paper and said “I will write my name”. She then said “I like to write with a pencil”. She then grabbed one and started to write. She then said “This is broken” and placed in back in the basket. She then grab another one and said “This has a point at both ends weird”. She placed that one back and got another one. Then she started writing as she used her right hand and gasped the pencil with her thumb and two index fingers. She wrote the letter H-a-y-d-i-n. The teacher then asked her “what does the spell”. She said “H-a-y-d-i-n that spells Haydin”. She then said “I will write my last name on the back”. She flipped over the paper and then stopped and said “Mrs. Jennifer what is the first letter”. Mrs. Jennifer said “Who don’t you go get your box that has your name and bring it to the table”. Haydin went and got her box and brought it over. She then wrote the letters …show more content…
Phonological awareness is the knowledge of sounds to make a connection with words (Levey & Polirstok, 2011, p. 196). An example of this is when she pointed to the letter and said each one. Then we look at her orthographic knowledge this is “the understanding that the same sounds can spell. An example of this is when the teacher asked what does that spell she said the letter and then said Haydin. Haydin writing is in between stage 5 invented spelling and stage 6 standard spelling. (Moomaw & Hieronymus, 2001, p. 5-6) The reason that she is between is because she is writing her name, but some of the letters and backwards and she still is coloring in letters such as the e and the I. If Haydin continues to write I am sure that she will make it to the standard spelling
