Kristen and Duane Watkins have adopted children from Ethiopia for several years. The family has recently encounters Brandon Stanton, practically a complete stranger to the family, who helped them raise $26,000 to complete the adoption of their son in Ethiopia. Duane Watkins has said, “kindness is too small a word to describe what their family experienced” (CNN). Stanton is a bond trader-turned-photographer who created the website Humans of New York about three years ago. Duane, a television photographer, was apart of a crew at work who were launching a story about Stanton. While Duane was driving the crew and Stanton around New York City, he remarked that the traffic was similar to the traffic in Ethiopia.Stanton soon after asked about Duane’s business in Ethiopia and discovered that he travelled there to adopt his daughter. …show more content…
However this time, adoption was more complicated than before because of financial problems. The family have held yard sale and duane have sold his music equipment and cameras to bring Richard, their son, home, but at the end of the day, it was not enough. The Walkins later went to Brandon Stanton and on October 29th, the “Let’s Bring Richard Home” page was created on the crowd-funding site Indiegogo.Indiegogo is an international crowdfunding platform that has raised millions of dollars for campaigns all over the world. “Let’s Bring Richard Home” campaign has been shared over 15,000 times worldwide. The Watkins could not believe their eyes and in less than 90 minutes, the $26,000 goal was met. However the contribution for Richard return home was not over. About $83,000 was raised and the money is being used for Richard’s adoption and the children’s education. The Watkins are so grateful and shell-shocked that all these different strangers around the world felt compelled to give the family money to help them with the
