I sat on a stool in the kitchen and visited with Mrs. Rice while the knife and steel flashed back and forth. "Ziiick, ziiick, ziiick.” (add quotation mark) Much practice allowed me the luxury of operating on autopilot. As I worked, I glanced into a nearby trash can where I noticed a small book. Curious, I put the knife and steel down, leaned over, and fished it out. About the size of a Reader's Digest, the book had a plain white cover with the name of a school printed in simple black text.

As I read the first few pages, I learned the inventor of the world's largest earthmoving equipment, R.G. LeTourneau founded the school. In 1946, he bought the former military facility, Harmon General Hospital in Longview, Texas; one-hundred fifty-six acres and two hundred buildings.

I'd known her for two years.

"A book," I stammered, unable to tear myself away from it long enough to look at her.

"About what?"

"Ah... well, I'm not sure, I think it's a college catalog, but I've never seen anything like it."

"See something in it that interests you?"

"Yes, yes I sure do." Unashamed, I babbled on about the school's aviation program and my lifelong addiction to anything and everything having to do with aviation.

"Well then, that's where you should go," she said.

Just like that. Right! She thought it was so easy. Poor Donna, she didn't have a clue, so I patiently explained the cascade of impossible economic and logistical roadblocks that conspired to prevent such an idea.

"Yes, yes, I hear all that, but do you want to go there?" she persisted.

Man! Either she didn't get it, or she was some sort of sadist. This agony needed to end, so I decided to terminate the insane conversation and call her bluff.

"Okay, yes, sure I want to attend this school." I wondered how she was going to deal with that.

"Then come with me.” And she walked out the door fully expecting me to
