A writer, a playwright, and a radio commentator was a few of David Sedaris many talents. Many of David Sedaris’ writings had an autobiographical focus to them (Faigley 88). His writing Let is Snow, is stupendously written, but it also has a dark side, with the underlying very real issues of alcoholism in families. Sedaris work is a very relatable to readers in todays day and age. His writing shoes examples of hatred, confusion, and humor. This story deals with extremely personal issues. Children are put into foster care every single day due to parents who suffer from alcoholism or drug abuse. “One of us should get hit by a car, I said. That would teach the both of them” (Sedaris in Faigley 90). At this point of the story the child is so full of rage and anger because of the abandonment he feels from his mother. There are always stories being told of the eight year old child who got upset with their mother or father. The child packs their bag and threatens to run away but never actually has the courage or want to actually do it. The story continues with the six year old little girl who lays down. Cars begin to pass and ask if that is person laying feet from the passing vehicles. As a reader that puts a very disturbing image in the mind. The image of a child lying in a dip between two hills is a very disturbing image that again would continue to bring emotions up in a reader. After the disturbing image, Sedaris begins to bring comedy into a very suspenseful part of the story after the children see their mother coming towards them. “Are you wearing loafers? Lisa asked, and in response our mother raised her barefoot. I was wearing loafers, she said. I mean really, it was there a second ago” (Sedaris in Faigley 90). This point of the story may or may not bring a smile to the readers face. It is a part of the story that is unexpected but a good addition. “This is how things went. One moment she was looking us out of our own house and the next we were rooting around in the snow looking for her left shoe” (Sedaris in Faigley 90). This was a very strong closure to the story he used comedy to show the strong bond between family. Yes, their are hardships in every family but no matter what a family is faced with the family will still love and care for one another. Today, in a world that has families facing issues such as this story every single day makes it very relatable to the every day reader. Everyone wants to feel loved and cared for. Reading a story on how a mother could be so cruel and cold hearted to her children that love her so much no matter what she has done to them is a very touching one. A persons love for someone close to them will always take precedence over all
