One of the main ideas behind collaborative family therapy is that the family is the expert. According to Sutherland (2007), collaborative therapists do not try to facilitate change in clients or to elicit a particular outcome, direction, or answer from the clients; the therapeutic goals and tasks emerge from within the conversation rather than being introduced by the therapist. This idea shifts the power away from the therapist and places it with the clients. During sessions, I will convey to the Burnham’s that my role is to facilitate a conversation that helps them to discuss and resolve their issues and that I am not there to tell them what to do.
