Many times in life things do not go as intended. Whether it is the unplanned birth of a child or the untimely demise of a loved one, we quickly realize what is meant to be will be. Several times, I have considered myself to be the most qualified, smartest, or even the prettiest in the group. Thus, I put my best foot forward in the race. I bought hundreds of “Vote Alyssa K.” stickers and pencils to hand out. I would occasionally find my opponent trying to out-do my posters, but I figured that could only harm her campaign. Instead of becoming discouraged and giving in to her attempt to intimidate me, I decided to work twice as hard to get my name out. Finally, election day came and you could hear the adrenaline pumping through my veins. “Your 2016-2017 Student Council President is…Marissa Williams.” In other words, I lost. I felt a flash of emotion; shocked that students ignored my validity, embarrassed because I was so sure that I would be elected, and even upset with the urge to prove that the votes had been rigged. I stormed out of the building and attempted to get as far away as possible. Isolating myself from society during such a tough time was one of the most revolutionizing things I could have done. I longed to win the position to show that I could run the school, not because of my actual wish to become President. After realizing my desire for social acceptance was harming my ability to prosper, the reiteration of following my dreams, due to my passion in a field instead of its prestige, became very
