Before analyzing the purpose of the book, it’s vital to defined what failure means to you, is it doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result, is it stopping at a mediocre solution, or not even realizing the solution at all? These are the ideas the Heller challenged in this collection of essays.
When I began reading the book, I had numerous ideas of what a failure was. Most were expected, such as an action that people learn from, or a path that leads you to an unwanted outcome. However, I was curious about the definition. For example, if know one acknowledges the failure, is it still considered a failure? Author sharply responded to the issue of designers, being and becoming authors. Also we are exposed to the idea that designers are often expected to take on multiple roles. Rock’s main gripe with the role of the designer today is their involvement with content, their ability to generate “meaningful” content, and inherent responsibilities to additionally act as an author.…

Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things is about two researchers, Michael Braungart and William McDonough, who begin a journey on finding new ways to build anything in daily life. They want to encourage designers to rethink on how they currently build their products. For example, they worked on building an aluminum soda can that has a seed in it so if someone throws it out the window, something can grow. They worked on soda cans because once you paint a label on the soda can, there is no way to undo that step. The existence of “wicked problems” suggests that designers cannot simply analyze a problem and purpose a solution directly from that because the creation of “wicked problems” does not lie under any subject matter, it is a special subject matter of its own. Although graphic design involves several branches of science, design problems are not linear to direct scientific or mathematical calculations or theories. Thus, a design process is recognized as indeterminacy which implies that there is no definitive conditions or limits to design problems. For example, if a graphic designer was asked to create a new logo for a company, the solution created by the designer shows indeterminacy according to the ten properties of wised problems identified by…
