Lessons and lies:Theme in,”The Lie” In Kurt Vonnegut Jr.’s short story, “The Lie,” the protagonist named Eli, was supposed to be the 31st in his family to attend Whitehill Boarding School. Unfortunately he did not get accepted, and withheld that news from his parents in which led to an uncomfortable and tense car ride. The author suggested that this wasn’t out of the ordinary and that Eli had a strained relationship with them. When they finally arrived Eli ran out of the room when he saw the headmaster, so he wasn’t in the room when his intense and judgmental father heard the news. One lesson that the story demonstrates is when parents and children don't have open communication but instead have strict and high expectations, their parent-child relationship becomes unhealthy. From the beginning of the short story, the author gave detailed descriptions of the car ride showing Eli’s father’s harshness. He was unreasonable and demanding of Eli as well as Eli’s mom, Sylvia. Vonnegut tells how “He noticed that Eli slumped way down in the front seat. ‘Eli!’ he said sharply. ‘Sit up straight!’ He returned his attention to Sylvia.” This quote shows that Eli’s father, Doctor Remenzel, harshness shows his strict, high …show more content…
This leads to “The doctor ordered a Martin, then turned to his son and said,’Your mother has the idea that you’re entitled to special privileges around here. I hope you don’t have that idea too.’ ‘No, sir,’ said Eli. ‘It would be a source of the greatest embarrassment to me.” said Doctor Remenzel with considerable grandeur, ‘if I were ever to hear that you had used the name Remenzel as though you thought Remenzels were something special.’ ‘I know,’ said Eli wretchedly.” This shows the guarded communication style amongst the family has a gloomy and overwhelming feeling when they

Vonnegut’s description of the setting helps convey the idea that the world’s resources are limited and the planet can only support a certain number of people. In the beginning of the story, old age, diseases, and accidents are eliminated and contribute to people living extremely long lives. Because people can live so long, the law states that “no newborn child could survive unless the parents of the child could find someone who would volunteer to die.” This law shows that stabilizing the population is very important because of the limited resources. Mr. Wheling is not pleased that he has to choose one of his children to live, and Dr. Hitz argues back: “…before scientists stepped in and laid down the law, there wasn't even enough drinking water…

Do you ever feel like nobody knows the real you? Does keeping your questions and thoughts to yourself really cause less problems? Teachers, parents, and guidance counselors are always telling their kids and students to always be open about their feelings, in order for them to be able to be there for you and help you achieve your goals. Ursula LeGuin employs this topic in her novel, Very Far Away from Anywhere Else, written during the early 21st century. Set in a small city, the story revolves around Owen, a senior in high school, who is considered to be a loner and outsider.…

In the short story ‘The Lie’ by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., all of the Remenzels feel pressure with Eli going to the Whitehill School for Boys. But, the Remenzel that receives the most pressure is the doctor. Firstly, Dr. Remenzel feels the ‘weight’ of the name Remenzel: that the prideful Remenzel name should continue through Eli at Whitehill. “‘...but... I see all the buildings named after Remenzels,... and all the hundreds of thousands of dollars given by Remenzels for scholarships.’”…

The main idea of "The Lie" by Kurt Vonnegut is that it is important for there to be a balance of trust and communication between family members so that they avoid being dishonest to each other and themselves. For example, the text reads, "'I wonder how many Remenzels have gone to Whitehill,' said Sylvia. 'That's like asking how many people are dead in a cemetery,' said the doctor... ' All of 'em'" (Vonnegut 2). This evidence proves that attending Whitehill was not an option for Eli, it was a set expectation that he would go.…

Before reading this novel, I was reluctant at to what the purpose or meaning of the novel was. I knew it was in regards to a survivor of the World Wars, who has decided to create an anti-war novel explaining the various experiences and emotions during this tragic time of war and bombing. I did not understand how this was going to be an anti-war novel, yet the author was speaking about war and all the techniques and trickeries of surviving the war. In some parts of the book, Vonnegut incorporates inappropriate situations, in-depth, that should not be expressed to all ages. Within chapter two, Billy cheats on his wife with some in the “laundry room”.…

I’m quite at a loss as to what to say. the short story does not give too much away as to Mark Twain’s life or how he lived. i think that the writing of what it might be like to lie is more a treatise on lying that it it ever a comedy, for I do not experience the humour when reading the piece. i think that is what bothers me - it is rather meandering, with some vague references to friends and examples of their faux-pas through lying, even if they didn't notice themselves doing it. the character wakes up in Missouri, where he lives.…

“Parenting gone wrong” is a phrase used to describe a child’s bad behaviour when he or she does something unexpected. Many call this phrase harsh because one can never control children. If children behave in a certain way later on in life it can’t be blamed on their upbringing, but does it really have nothing to do with bad parenting when a child feels abandoned and feels that they have been forced to do something they never wanted to? The story “Next term, we’ll mash you”, which is written by Penelope Lively, focuses on how the bond between parents and children can affect a child’s life.…
