I, Gilles Corey, have been arrested by the court and am now being tried with penalty of death. The try me on the premise that I will not provide the names of those that had signed my deposition to the court. At dawn they intend to press me with stones until I provide these names. They think this act will break me, what they don't know is that I've learned my lesson and I refuse. I may not have much time left, seeing that dawn is approaching, though despite this fact I see need to record some of the events that transpired this spring of 1692. The child began shortly after assumptions were made about Paris's daughter Betty. Little Betty maybe a list, had seen her flyin' around and dancin' in the woods. This also included Abigail Williams. Then Reverend Hale arrived to evaluate her. Course upon seeing him I posed to him a question about my lovely Martha. "What signifies the readin' of strange books?" (Miller 40) I says. I didn't mean nothin' by it, I was only curious. I had been put off by my Martha readin' and I didn't think no harm would come of askin' bout it. It wasn't too strange and although "I have waked many a time and found her in a corner, readin' of a book" (Miller 40) I didn't think it to be witchcraft. Then because of my ill judgement they took her away! They want to try her for witchcraft! "I never said my wife were a witch…I only said she were reading books!"(Miller 71) They took her because of me...because I let curiosity get the better of me. I have condemned my wife for I know she will not confess herself a witch. She will hang for what I have done and the guilt will rest with me forever. I have made the mistake of saying her readin' stopped my prayers though I didn't mention id only just become aquatinted with them... that no good Putnam saw it as an opportunity to get back at me. He and I have had troubles for a long time. He believes all his troubles are my doing he just wants to take the land that is rightfully belongs to my family and
