The students are currently short on the recommended 150 minutes of physical education per week according the National Association for Sport and Physical Education guidelines. By incorporating this unit students will receive 50 minutes of physical education per week of quality physical education. By updating the current units taught at the school students will continue to build and acquire new motor skills that will help them develop overall, while improving their concepts of volleyball. The unit also will provide students with a variety of skills and games that can help them develop and lead to the students appreciation of volleyball. The unit will also provide students with opportunities to check for understanding and build on student learning while recalling their prior knowledge and previous experiences with volleyball. By updating the current volleyball unit students will also be able to demonstrate an understanding of new content through discussion and physical assessment test. Standard 1Personal Health and Fitness: As a result from participating in a 3rd grade volleyball unit students will be able to demonstrate basic motor skills, manipulative skills, non-loco motor skills, and apply concepts of direction, space, and body awareness. Through the implementation of practice students will develop and perform proper methods in bumping and setting, while developing their basic skills and strategies to effectively participate in a full volleyball game. The unit will address students in developing competencies also in the psychomotor domain through individual or partner practice
