Less Normal Sleep Patterns

Decent Essays
Over the past five days, I got an average of nine and a half hours of sleep. On Saturday the third, I fell ill. Because of my sickness, I received twelve and fourteen hours of sleep on Sunday and Monday night as well as taking multiple naps. This in turn affected my average and is less normal of sleep patterns for me. I did not allow myself to sleep when my body tried to send messages, saying that I’m tired. Instead, I stayed awake until 11, 12:30, and even 2 AM studying and finishing homework. What I did not realize was at that time of night, my brain was fried and wouldn’t absorb any information, no matter how many times I read and re-read my notes. One night, I had an odd dream that I was returning to Camp Huawni, but I was in an unfamiliar

From an average student's’ perspective the idea of sleeping to be more productive is perceived to be counter intuitive, and in essence, ironic. When taking into consideration the dense academic and auxiliary workload of a student; essays, projects, assignments, tests, finding internships, research, establishing meaningful relationships, and personal activities to get a mental break from it all, efficiency is paramount and sleep should not be the go to course of action. However, this linear way of conceptualizing how one’s productivity is affected as a result of a nap can cause a few caveats on understanding the benefits that naps can give. But for those that are enthralled by the action of sleeping, and even consider it as a hobby, can they pull themselves out of their dazed state and use the nap as an effective means to make sure they can complete their work? Are naps a secret technique used as a means to master the constant struggle of time management, or are they simply distractions?…

“Sleep is a complex, active process that is programmed by man’s circadian rhythm”.(Honkus) Physiological changes such as body temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, hormone secretion, sensory acuity, and behavioral functions are predictable and depend on the maintenance of that 24- hours cycle. Sleep deprivation can negatively affect the immune system and decrease the person’s ability to resist and fight illness - one of the direct causes of hospitalizations and prolonged stays. Research shows, that patients in ICU may spend 40% to 50% of their sleep time awake, and of the remaining sleep time only 3% to 4% in REM sleep. More time is spent to try to achieve sleep, and it is usually the first two stages, as any disruption of sleep shifts it back to the starting point of light…

Research Problem Pioneering research into the effects and countermeasures of fatigue is largely understudied according to Scott et al. (2010) ; the effects of extended work hours, time hours worked and the inverse relation to sleep and nursing errors has received little recognition. Furthermore, the problem of night shift fatigue is so prevalent the American Nurses Association (ANA), the Institute of Medicine (IOM), and the Joint Commission have called for fatigue countermeasures to be researched and implemented so nurses can provided the highest level of care to their patients. The necessity for fatigue countermeasures transcends healthcare according to Scott et al.…

Circadian rhythm is defined as the biological clock in the brain that operates internal organs on a reoccurring 24-hour cycle (Myers, 2014). It is an advanced timing system relying on sunlight and darkness to control biochemical changes effectively to prepare the body to go to sleep (Laber-Warren, 2015). The suprachiasmatic nucleus, located in the hypothalamus, monitors the intensity of blue light waves and serves as the brain’s master clock (Myers, 2014). The master clock can be altered if it encounters bright lights at night including the digital screens of cellphones, TV sets, or laptops which have the same blue light waves as sunlight (Laber-Warren, 2015). This altercation sends messages to the brain thinking it’s the morning causing…
