Less Lethal Weapons

The use of guns against public citizens is a big topic in the news. Young adults were being shot and killed; this could have been prevented if the officer had used a less-lethal weapon to apprehend subjects. This topic was challenging because different information sources have various opinions on less-lethal weapons. My experience with less-lethal weapons was limited to living with my father who is retired Rockingham County Sheriff and he handled less-lethal weapons. If lives of people can be saved in the use of less-lethal weapons than law enforcement should use them to their advantage. The decrease in the use of bullets could only have a positive effect. Less-lethal weapons also help to keep criminals from harming officers. I learned about

Roth concluded that “Several strategies may succeed in reducing gun murders, but rigorous evaluations are needed to ascertain their effectiveness. Among these are reducing firearm lethality (e.g., by banning certain types of ammunition), reducing unauthorized use (e.g., through combination locks on triggers, or sentence enhancements for burglary and fencing violations that involve guns), and educating the public about safe use and storage” (Roth, 2007). He concludes that not gun banning, but reform related to education and pursuing the criminality of illegal arms trade will curb gun violence in the United States. His overall conclusion from his findings is: “Where there is local support, priority should be given to three enforcement objectives: disrupting illegal gun markets; reducing juveniles ' access to guns; and close cooperation between the police and the community to set priorities and enforce laws” (Roth, 2007). Only by working together can the government and its citizens in the U.S. aim to curve violent crime.…

After doing some research, I have found that there are numerous less-lethal weapons that law enforcement officers can use in the future to prevent unnecessary deaths from occurring. Some of the most promising ones include pepper balls, or pepper-spray pellets, which are placed in a paintball type gun and explode once they hit an exterior, subsequently letting out pepper-spray. Another promising less-lethal weapon is a handgun attachment that slows down the speed of a bullet. The attachment is a clip on piece that goes on the barrel and rather than a possible deadly situation, the slowed down bullet will only knock over the intended target.…

Conclusion The author assumes that the solution of police frisking will help to resolve the issue of gun violence in a better way compared to gun legislation. With the complete dismissal of gun control advocates and failure to highlight the consequences of police frisking, the argument made by the author is weak as well as ineffective. The frisking argument provided by the author tends to focus almost exclusively on its legality, but fails to provide an instance where similar policies have successfully been applied to resolve the issue at hand or to decrease the number of illegal guns that existed in a certain…

One major advantage that could come with this solution would be the immediate change in the law system that would appease the people who are currently pushing for stricter gun laws. If the plan works the way it is intended, then less guns would mean less opportunity for gun violence in a perfect world. The disadvantages that could possibly come from the solution above could be problems such as, decreased protection, the money and time spent on enforcing the new laws, and the…

Society has been split into two over whether or not guns should be banned, but there needs to be a solution where both parties can be happy. Anti-gun advocates present reasoning why guns should be banned. McMahan’s main two arguments of why guns should be banned: one, guns in the community creates a more dangerous environment; and two, the police have less of a power to protect citizens when society has guns (Shafer-Landau, The Ethical Life (EL) 390). McMahan explains that communities are not going to be free of crimes with more people carrying around guns, because criminals will be more prepared, efficient, and quicker to grab and shoot their target (Shafer-Landau, EL 392-392). People with guns will be safer than people without guns, because they do not have a gun to protect themselves.…

The intention of a gun was to stop those who bring harm, but I feel neither way ends or stops harm on one another. Insted I feel it draws it closer and causes many innocent lifes to be harmed. The fact that our police officers have been shooting unarmed victims is a very unsettling topic indeed. I read, one case a police shot a man that was wearing headphones. The police pulled the young man over at a local gas station yet as the man went to turn off his music, the police then shot and killed the unarmed man.…

Analysis of “Just Take Away Their Guns” James Q. Wilson is a man who is very passionate about the issue of gun control. However, in his essay “Just Take Away Their Guns,” that passion gets the best of him in what is decidedly a very biased and unsupported argument for the implementation of “stop-and-frisk” policies in place of more gun sale restrictions. While his claim that people need guns to defend themselves is at times convincing, he fails to provide enough evidence to convince his audience that police frisks will solve the issue of gun violence, instead just seemingly assuming that his solution is a better option than more gun legislation. That, along with his complete dismissal of gun-control advocates and his lack of consideration for…

In order to increase safety all throughout the United States time and effort must not be spent towards limiting gun owners of their rights. In the essay, “Just Take Away Their Guns”, James Q. Wilson a Management and Policy professor at UCLA, argues that legally owned guns are not the problem, in fact the real problem lies with society ignoring the usage of illegal guns. The purpose of this essay is to convey to society that gun crimes can be stopped before a shot is fired, that it does not entitle a huge stack of forms at the local gun store. Wilson effectively argues that legally owned guns are necessary for citizens to protect themselves, reasonable police frisks should be in place to stop illegal gun use before the crime is committed and ultimately guns agitate the situation making crimes worse. The authors credibility and logical appeal are overall effective, in spite of the lack of emotional appeal or connection to the audience. Despite the absence of Pathos, the author conveys an adequate amount of logic, which carries the paper to an effective and persuasive conclusion.…

In recent years, a lot of debate had been going on about the laws pertaining to firearms. Unfortunately, with all of the mass shootings and killings being reported by the media, guns are given a bad reputation. Sadly, many people believe that they should be illegal because they are dangerous and can kill people, but what these people don’t realize is making them illegal will do a lot more harm than good. Guns have created a balance in society and if we were to take them away it could cause a lot of chaos which would result in more crime and more casualties. People deserve the right to bear arms because with proper training one could possibly save his/her life and also protect others.…
