Have you ever had the urge to gnaw off your fingers or lips? It may not appeal to you to do this, but people with Lesch-Nyhan syndrome see nothing wrong with chewing off their lips. Scientist do not have all of the answer to this disease, and what causes people to bite off their lips and fingers still leave scientists bewildered. Lesch-Nyhan syndrome affects how the body builds and/or breaks down purines. Purines are natural substances found in all of the body’s cells and also in most foods. Purines provide part of the chemical structure of our genes. When purines are not broken down correctly, then people tend to have a high level of uric acid. Lesch-Nyhan disease causes excessive amounts of uric acid to be released from the blood. Gouty arthritis …show more content…
This gene is located on the X chromosome, hence why men are more susceptible to this disorder than women. There are exactly seven women who have been diagnosed with this syndrome. This disorder is passed on between generations and is completely genetic, and occurs in one out of 380,000 people. There are not many ways that doctors can test for Lesch-Nyhan syndrome, but there still are a few. Children under the age of ten can be tested for high uric acid, and if there is a greater than 2.0 urate-to-creatinine ratio, then your child more than likely has Lesch-Nyhan disease. Specialists can also test for Lesch-Nyhan through a series of physical exams. These exams will test mainly the reflexes, and people with this disorder tend to have over exaggerated reflexes as well as many spasms. Alternative ways to test for this disease it to examine the blood and urine for irregular amounts of uric …show more content…

Degeneration of muscles usually begins to appear in the lower half of the body then spreading into upper limbs and eventually leading to death. Between 1830 and 1850 scientists reported on an illness where boys grew gradually weaker, lost the ability to walk and died at an early age. A decade later, French neurologist Guillaume Duchene first described the DMD that now carries his name. However until 1980, only few were known regarding any form of muscular dystrophy.…

The streets were unusually quiet as I made my way from the 10th floor of the children's hospital to the McDonalds' on 31st Street. It was already 11 at night and I had to decide if I wanted to take the subway or pay the high fee for a taxi ride all the way from New York City to Hoboken, New Jersey. I ordered a Big Mac and a large fry to take home as my dinner and decided a taxi was the best way to travel for tonight. I lugged all of my sheet music into the backseat of the taxi with me and watched the bright lights disappear as I gobbled down my fast food meal. Nights like these make me remember my father the way he was before Lesch-Nyhan Syndrome took over his body and mind.…

In the early 1900s, inherited diseases were first linked to chromosomes. Discoveries starting in the 1950s have helped scientists to develop genetic tests for genetic conditions such as Down syndrome, cystic fibrosis, and Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Genetic testing was initially used to make or confirm a diagnosis of a genetic condition, and to screen newborns for conditions such as phenylketonuria (PKU), so that early interventions and treatments could be administered. The screening of these genetic diseases led to appropriate assessment of the problem and assurance to the affected which are two of the core public health principles.…

What is genetic testing? Genetic testing is a scientific and medical testing where scientists (change scientists to something else) identify for changes in a person’s genes, chromosomes or protein. It is considered when someone wants to identify health risks, allowing the doctor to make recommendations to their health and decrease their chance in developing the certain disease, or to test to see if the person has other genetic conditions, which would impact their chance of passing on or developing a genetic disorder. Though many positives may outweigh the negatives of genetic testing, does not mean the drawbacks of it should not be considered. When your results are concluded, it may emotionally affect you and your family.…
