Les valeurs personnelles is one of many paintings by Rene Magritte that challenges human views of reality by making ordinary objects become realistic and human-like. Magritte portrays a full room of everyday objects that are painted way out of proportion. He uses techniques like portraying ordinary objects in and unreal way, to make viewers question reality and think deeper about the little things that we have in life. Rene Magritte was a Belgium surrealist painter, born in Belgium, Germany on November 21, 1898. At the age of 18 he left home and attended the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts art school for two years in Brussels. In 1921 he served in the military for one year but then came home and married his long life friend Georgette Berger. Before becoming a popular artist he worked in the commercial advertising business to support his painting career. Magritte drew his own personal items in this painting and some of his other paintings to make viewers think about some of their personal valuables, and re-examine its significance in their life. He is trying to make a point that people need to realize the importance of these little objects that barely get recognized for how much they are really worth. The painting is meant to open the eyes of viewers in hopes that after understanding this painting they will enjoy and appreciate the little things in life more often.
