Not long after Javert helped Jean Valjean get Marius to his grandfather’s house, Javert took Jean Valjean to his address. Instead of taking Jean Valjean back to the galleys as a prisoner, Javert waited till Jean Valjean went inside his building to leave. After leaving Jean Valjean behind, Javert begin to reflect back on his actions and the logic he had behind them, in the end “he saw before him two roads, both equally straight, but he saw two, and that terrified him -him, who had never in his life known but one straight line. And, bitter anguish, these two roads were contradictory. One of these straight lines included the other. Which of the two are the true one?(530)”. After leaving Jean Valjean Javert doesn’t quite understand the fact that he just let a galley slave go. This is the start of Javert’s transition from a closed mind to a little more open minded being. Javert no longer thinks that there is one correct path in life. He now understands that there are more than one road he can take in life, and both paths are considered to be the right way. Throughout the beginning of the book javert continuously brought pain to those who didn't quite deserve it. He only believed that there was one right way to go in life. In the end javert discovered that second road he could follow and continue doing right. He realized that every thing isn’t in black and white he began to understand and see thing in a different way. Because of this he was able to help Jean
