Leroy Jethro Gibbs is a character from the television series N.C.I.S. played by actor Mark Harmon. Gibbs is a former marine sniper turned Special Investigator for the Naval Criminal Investigation Service (N.C.I.S.). Having never gotten over the murder of his daughter and wife by a Mexican drug cartel, he is reserved with his feelings and guards against getting too attached to those around him. His closest relationships are with his father Jackson, and reluctantly, with his team of four investigators who work with him to solve criminal cases involving military personnel. I chose this character because he is the opposite of what many might call a traditional modern leader. Gibbs is a techno neophyte, who would rather use a rotary phone and notepad, then to be burdened with and smart phone and laptop. He is analytical in his approach, and prefers to focus on the facts of a situation rather than on any emotion that may be found. Despite communicating to other that there is but one way to do things (his way), he fosters relationships and mentors the people who work …show more content…
He is uncompromising in his values, and in what he expects from his team. Despite a boorish demeanor, he demonstrates a subtle charisma that “communicates high expectations for follows”(Northouse, 2013, p.189). Leroy Gibbs’ “my way or the highway” approach leaves little room for excuses. Despite demanding a lot from team, he never lets them take on tasks that are beyond their ability, nor does he sends his people into a situation they not prepared for. He has a set of rules that his team follows. These rules are more than a list of what to do and not do, but rather a set of guiding principles for life. Although he demands that his team heed his authority he doesn’t always do the same. He is “A born leader whose unorthodox approaches and willingness to bend the rules always gets the job done.” (USA Network, n.d.,

Harvey: Harvey has a Laissez Faire leadership style. Laissez faire is a French word that means no interference. Managers inform workers what must be achieved, but do not get involved in telling workers how these objectives should be achieved. This style can be seen when Harvey gives Mike the pro bono cases to do, he tells Mike that he must win the case but does not tell him how he should achieve that objective. When things in the case go wrong, Harvey tells Mike that he should fix the mistakes and win back Joanna but does not tell him how to do it or how to approach it.…
