Greece, located in southeastern Europe, is considered the cradle of Western civilization, having been the birthplace of the many pillars of civilization: from democracy to philosophy. This, in fact, one of many reasons why I always love visiting Greece. Pure indescribable beauty, be it secret beaches far from the madding crowds, hidden bays that are demanding to reach yet rewarding in their experience, charming island villages awash in light, ancient traditions, authentic and unsullied flavors.
Some of the travelers (or tourists, whichever you prefer to call yourselves), are already familiar with the oh-so-fabulous Santorini, the beautiful island in the southern Aegean Sea. But how about the hidden gems across Greece that you might haven’t

Leros, the Unknown Island
There is a number of Greek Islands that you probably find on every top 10 list, but I think Leros, a relatively isolated island of Dodecanese, won’t never be one of them. In Leros you will find a special architecture that have been influenced by the Cycladic but also by Italian and Alexandrian. Lakki, the capital of the island was designed by Italians. Leros offers hiking activities with very beautiful paths. One of the most beautiful trails are from the Merikia’s museum tunnel to Katsouni and the Lighthouse. For those that summer holidays are combined mainly with lying on beaches, well Leros has some beautiful beaches too! The beach Vromolithos just before the Panteli is a classic choice, like Alinta and Dio Liskaria. On the west coast, you have to visit the bay of Gourna where you will find a sandy beach with trees and tavern, an absolute typical Greek picture. Once you get up there, don’t forget to visit the picturesque church of St. Isidoros, which is built on a reef in the sea.

The immense history of Greece could not be possible for the impressive and influential city-states located throughout the regions. Mycenae, Knossos, and Troy are three revered and questioned palatial sites that operated in similar and opposing ways. In the late 1800s, three archaeologists excavated their ways into the history books. Sir Arthur Evans became recognized as the British archaeologist who uncovered the palace at Knossos, on the island of Crete in the Aegean Sea. Heinrich Schliemann discovered Mycenae and with the assistance of the knowledge benefactor for Hisarlik, he and Frank Calvert uncovered the ruins of the historical Troy from Homer’s…

Centuries before wonders rose in Rome, Greece was the the center of the Mediterranean, with mighty city states ruling under the shadow of Mount Olympus. The people of Greece worshipped the mighty Gods, who ruled down from the summit of Mount Olympus in the north ever since they had defeated their fathers, the Titans. There were also many great heroes who roamed Greece, and one of the mightiest heroes began his journey with a foot race on the Western Island of Ithaca. It was a warm spring afternoon on Ithaca, as half a dozen youths darted down the long dirt path parallel to the Island’s main port. Among these great heroes are Theseus and Perseus. These two mythological figures hold many similarities; therefore, comparing the myths of Theseus and Perseus allows one to detect underlying themes and messages that resemble and complement each other.…
