The Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America has been around for the past 50 years trying to find a cure for these two debilitating inflammatory bowl diseases (IBD). For the past five decades, it has been the CCFA’s duty to try and improve the quality of life of every one of the patients who struggle on a day-to-day basis. Therefore, each and every day millions of volunteers make it possible for this organization to receive the finances and support they need in order for researchers to explore and investigate new paths that could uncover a potentially new cure for IBD. The constant support and awareness of these troubling diseases make individuals all around the nation interested in helping out. In fact, it is important to note that inflammatory…
Hodgkin’s disease, or lymphoma, is a largely curable form of cancer. Largely. Yet, how do you look into the eyes of two people who lost their son to it? I was used to Mike asking me questions when I shadowed him. As a PA in a small-town medical office, he knew everyone, and he knew many things, consistently sharing them with me.…
First the mother will continue to deny medical treatment for the child and rely on divine interventions. The second possible outcome is that the mother will make an exception and consent for the treatment. After educating the mother regarding meningitis, we can only hope that the mother will change her mind to accept the treatment. It is vital that medical professionals give thorough details and proof that treatment will be effective, such as showing her quantitative data, and results of those that did receive treatment from the same…
A medical diagnosis can change our minds in a positive or negative way, we can suggest to keep an open mind, when Cancer and Multiple sclerosis change our perspective on how we see illness. The Cancer Journal by Audre Lorde reflects on how a woman who loses her breast still believes that she is a warrior. Likewise, a famous feminist, Nancy Mairs, author of “On Being a Cripple” is a woman who calls herself “a cripple” by making fun of herself instead of having others do it for her. The way people see themselves is how the world beholds them. Thus, Lorde and Mairs call themselves a warrior and a cripple, which changes their perspectives on their illnesses and redefine themselves to prevent others from defining them.…

Long term conditions (LTC), or chronic illnesses, are life changing and have a major impact on people’s lives. People have to learn how to cope with the long-term disease, which is incurable, progressive and can exacerbate if the patient does not take care of themselves properly. (World health organisation, 2016 ) “Non-communicable diseases (NCSs), also known as chronic diseases, are not passed from person to person. They are of long duration and generally slow progression”.…
Even in today’s constantly advancing, dynamic, highly educated world there still exists disease. Throughout an individuals life it is undeniable that at some stage they will encounter a disease of some category whether that be a common dose of influenza or a more severe disease such as cancer. A startling amount of resources are pumped into combating diseases of all levels. Unfortunately it is still a reality that diseases of unknown etiology exist.…
Moynihan, Heath and Henry argue that the pharmaceutical industry capitalises on the want of consumers to eliminate undesirable conditions. They claim that pharmaceutical companies partake in “disease mongering”: that is, they fabricate new diseases by “widening the boundaries of treatable illness”. Critics such as Healy and Dossey agree with this claim. However, I will argue that, although not unfounded, the claim that pharmaceutical companies are guilty of disease mongering is not justified. I will argue that the definition of disease presented by Moynihan, Heath and Henry does not conform to the accepted definition of disease.…

My father stared into the Doctor’s eyes, trying to blink away his tears. The room was as quiet as the doctor waited for my father to respond, but my father could not speak or move- he was as still as a statue. He did not dare speak because he knew he would begin to cry if he did. The doctor’s words were still echoing in my father’s head: “I’m sorry Mr. Greengrass, but you have Multiple Sclerosis” When my father was in his early forties, he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Multiple Sclerosis, or MS, “is the most widespread disabling neurological condition of young adults around the world” (Higuera & Pietrangelo), and there have been around 2.5 million known cases.…
For the past 50 years, social construction of illness has become a major research perspective as a subfield of medical sociology, which contributed to our social understanding and dimensions of illness. Illness and social constructionism developed to be a conceptual framework that emphasizes the cultural and historical aspects of phenomena widely thought to be absulutly natural. While the medical model, assumes that diseases are universal phenomena and invariant to time or place. Social constructionism explains how individuals and groups contribute to the social meaning of a disease or the biological condition, it also focus on how the meaning and experience of illness is shaped by individual cultural and surrounding social system (Brown…
