The Sociology Of Leopard Man Analysis

Leopard Man In his article, “The Sociology of Leopard Man,” Logan Feys believes that people that do not conform to society are freaks. Feys supports his belief through the use of pathos. Feys purpose is to satirize people who do not conform, in order to convince the audience that non-conformist are “freaks,” Fey uses pessimism with his intended audience. While I generally agree with Logan Fey’s statement about individuality, I found some of his positions to be quite extreme. It is this very type of extremes that make not only this issue of individuality so divisive, but also many other issues society faces today. Focusing on the extreme leaves little room for compromise and finding a common middle ground where I believe the majority lie. While using the Leopard Man as his example of individual and personal freedom of choice, Fey uses an extreme example of individual and personal freedom of choice. Remember, Leopard Man lived an isolated existence. Leopard Man says does not have to give up personal beliefs and individuality or that he is in “own paradise on the Earth” (Feys 7). Yet I often see examples of where conformity is necessary. Uniforms and dress codes at work may be required. Those workers at Hot Dog on a Stick in the mall may not like wearing those uniforms, but they are required for employment. Suits and ties are often required in the banking and business fields. As individuals, we have a choice to conform to these rules; employers have a choice to fire us if we don’t follow their requirements for employment. The non-conformist can explain these as attempts by society to suppress individuality and freedom of expression, but it is not. Society would be in chaos if there were no norms for decency and order.
