After the Successes of Mamma Mia and Jersey Boys Broadway became over saturated by Juke Box Musicals and there became less and less original works. One of the most infamous examples of this was Rock of Ages. This Jukebox Musical has a bunch of songs mashed together from the eighties. The show takes place in LA in the eighties with a kid trying to make it as rock star. This show…
40 was said to have come to the attention of Beethoven of all people soon enough the symphony. The Master was inspired by Mozart’s last movement when he wrote his own Symphony No. 5 to its composition by writing out passages in his own hand as well as paying allegiance. Symphony No.40 as the first movement, “became one of the most aggravating ringtones of the 90s, it was most likely very famous in Mozart’s lifetime, too”(Robins, 2015, p. 1). Even though scholars can’t be certain, it would appear Mozart performed it more than once, going on to rescore it for lightly different musical forces.…
The sonata-allegro form typically includes three sections: exposition, development, and recapitulation. The exposition of sonata-allegro presents the two themes consecutively, introducing them to the audience for the rest of the piece. Beethoven opens with his first theme, a powerful, urgent, and frantic melody in a minor key. At 1:48, however, the tone of the piece changes completely thanks to the second theme, which is emotional, tranquil, and, most importantly, performed in a major key. After Beethoven presents his two themes, Coriolan Overture enters the development section.…
The opening stanza and chorus of “Ode to Joy” both welcome the brotherhood of mankind into Elysium (Heaven), of which Joy is the daughter (www.synonym.com). The poetry of “Ode to Joy” gives this sense of Escape from Modern City Life, where the focus is on a legendary, spiritual, and fantasy type of lifestyle. The poem reads “Drunk with fire now we enter… Your magic powers join again…The kiss is for the whole wide world” which shows romantic themes of the supernatural fantasy, and overwhelming emotion. The 4th / final movement of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony is the longest. This movement used the entire orchestra, four vocal soloists, and a choir that sings “Ode to…
Partita no.2 in c minor, BWV 826 The second partita was announced a little less than a year after the first. Its minor key and the style of the opening sinfonia declare it to be a more serious piece. It is also more conventional, containing a relatively traditional allemande and courante as well as a rondeau, a form favored by Couperin and other French composers but treated sparingly by Bach. Yet these movements are conventional only superficially. The sinfonia, whose initial section looks like the dotted section of a French overture, changes after just seven measures to something quite different, though it does not have much to do with a typical Italian overture (sinfonia) either.…
In a letter to Bailli Du Roullet sent on 1 July 1775, Gluck had this to say about the work, “ The opera is a cask of frozen wine, the spirit which has withdrawn to the centre; it is truly exquisite but with too much body to be drunk in any quantity” . The opera’s librettist is Bailli Du Roullet and the opera consists of 3 acts. The specific work I will be focusing on is a piece called Grands dieux, du destin qui m’accable which is a very beautiful piece of music. The recording I listened to is sung by Sylvia Sass . Interesting to note, Alceste was not very well received in the years 1796 and 1804.…
This performance is now used to reference the start of the Baroque period and the invention of opera. Early opera was called Drammi per Musica, dramas with music. Seven years later, Claudia Monteverdi (1567-1643), succeeding “in composing his first opera, managed to create the first operatic masterwork” Orfeo (Orpheus in Italian). This was based on the mythological tale of Orpheus and Eurydice which was another version of the same story as Peri’s Eurydice. Greenberg (2009)…
Historically Paris finds a new art scene after the war which is incorporated into the set, narrative, and ballet. Within in the story there are three ballets, one at the beginning reflecting Paris after tragedy; a panorama of dark streets with breadlines. The second concluding act I, is to Gershwin’s second rhapsody and connects the charterers’ narratives together. The largest is the finale piece. They wanted to ballet to be a part of the narrative and made it a collaborative effort between the main characters.…
Even though his relationship with Antonie did not last, Beethoven went on to perform the Battle and Seventh Symphonies at the Hofburg palace in 1813 and continued his composing as before. The Archduke Trio op. 97 by Beethoven played in public for the first time in 1814, and his opera Fidelio played in front of the Congress of Vienna (Suchet, “1813-1827”). Another tragedy struck when Beethoven’s brother, Caspar, died in 1815. Custody of Karl became a battle between Beethoven and his mother, Johanna.…
Ludwig Van Beethoven, was the composer who changed music more than any other composer, the sound of music and what the other composers that were to come after him thought. He wrote nine symphonies, five piano concertos, an opera and many pieces of chamber music that jolted music right out of itself. Beethoven changed music by creating a new era called Romanticism, influencing the other composers and changing the old methods by adding a special twist. The first way that Beethoven changed music was by creating romanticism. Ludwig is viewed as the most transitional figure between the eras of classical and romanticism of musical history.…
