Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452 in Vinci, Italy. His mother, considered a peasant, and father, an attorney, never married and because of this, he had about 17 half- siblings. Though most see him as just an artist, he was so much more. Despite having only basic knowledge of writing, reading, and math in his earlier years, Leonardo was not just an artist, but he was also an inventor, architect, mathematician, engineer, anatomist, geologist, and a cartographer too. His great imagination and intelligence helped him to become a great inventor, though many did not see his work with the same passion or pride that he did. Though it was a great work of art, there are many conspiracies surrounding the portrait, such as the fact that her eyes portray sorrow yet her smiling image contradicts it in the painting. This has led many to believe that there were secret clues in the work. Many other theories support hidden symbols and meanings such as the one stating that the Mona Lisa has a perfect of symmetry. Many say that this line of symmetry forms a chalice, pointing to an indirect hint to the myth of the Holy Grail. Another popular theory is that the Mona Lisa is a self portrait of Da Vinci himself. This is shown by the similarities found between the Mona Lisa and an actual portrait of Leonardo during a comparison. Another popular belief is the portrait represents Leonardo’s mother, Caterina da Vinci, though there is no documented proof of this statement is true. Another unproved theory is that the picture is of the real Mona Lisa. Historically, her name was Lisa Del Giocando, though there is no real proof of this.
