Improved Essays
Leonardo Da Vinci has made many pieces of wonderful art throughout his lifetime. One piece of his art caught my eye and it is called “The Virgin of the Rocks.” This paining was made in about 1491/2-9 and 1508-8. There are two versions of this paining, one is at the Louvre in Paris, which was the first of this paining and the second one is held by the National Gallery in London. Both these painting though were made by Da Vinci. The painting that is in London is on the wall high up so spectators have to look up at it. It is in a beautiful frame that goes well with the painting. The other painting that is in Paris is at a lower hight for people to observe and is in a frame. Both are made out of oil paint, but the one in the National Gallery …show more content…
By using these types of lines the paintings it gives it a very precise look on the painting. There are all different types of shapes used in these paintings, starting with the shapes on the rocks in the background. These shapes are all different sizes. None of them are the same, Da Vinci created these rocks because that is the main part of this painting. Mary is sitting on these rocks and there are rocks all around her. He created these rocks to be very textual and to stand out. The lighting and value are different in each painting. In the Louvre version the lighting is brighter and the whole tone of the painting is lighter, as with the London Version it is dark and is more peaceful. As I have said before the colors used in these paintings are different. In the Louvre version the colors are brighter and primary and secondary colors are used. The red on the angels robe is primary and the green on the rocks is secondary colors. The two babies are pale and their hair is dark brown. In the London version it is a darker painting and again both types of colors are used. Mary blue robe is what the spectators eyes first go to when looking at this painting. The texture and pattern are important in the understanding of this paining. In both painting you can see that he took time and effort to make this a beautiful piece of art. The babies arms are sculpted to make it look like they are tone and the

For this second assignment, I have chosen to talk about dry media and wet media art works. “The dry media, which include metalpoint, chalk, charcoal, graphite, and pastel, consist of coloring agents, or pigments, that are sometimes ground or mixed with substances that hold the pigment together, called binders.”(p.165) I selected the composition “Study of a Woman's Head or the Angel of the Vergine delle Rocce, 1473” by Leonardo da Vinci. This is merely just a sketch of a woman's head from the finished art work of “Virgin of the Rocks”. Metalpoint is “One of the most common techniques used in drawing in the late-fifteenth- and early-sixteenth- century Italy.…

This love of learning, consequently, cultivated his fascination and close studies of the human anatomy.…

His pieces are known by been highly naturalistic incorporating seamless elegant details and at the same time portraying its figures in a simplistic way to enhance the beauty of them in the eyes of the beholder. Leonardo da Vinci’s The Virgin of The Rocks has a strong use of dark colors, creating a transition of light to darkness, making an emphasis on the depth of the features in the human body. These contrasts are known as chiaroscuro and sfumato, “they became a hallmark of Leonardo’s style” (Stokstand and Cothren 636). The seamless lines of the background blend into a whole with the human bodies as if they were vividly photographed.…
