Leonardo da Vinci Have you ever heard of a person that was an Italian polymath, painter, sculptor, architect, musician, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, geologist, cartographer, botanist, and writer all at the same time? Well I sure have! His name is Leonardo da Vinci. Leonardo was born on April 15, 1452, “at the third hour of night” in the Tuscan hill town of Vinci, in the lower valley of Florence. His father was a notary and a landlord named Messer Piero Fruosino di Antonio da Vinci. His mother was believed to be a peasant woman named Caterina. Some experts also believe that Caterina was a slave owned by Messer Piero. Leonardo had no brothers or sisters, in fact his parents never married. While in his young adulthood, Leonardo accomplished many things. As I mentioned in the beginning of my essay, he was not only a painter but also an architect and a sculptor. Most of this architectural work focused on general principals of design, although he did consult on a number of practical projects including cathedrals in Milan and Pravia, and the French king's chateau at Blois. He is believed to have contributed a number of sculptors including: The Saint John, the Baptist Preaching and The Levite. Leonardo the inventor made plans for a flying machine, a helicopter, a parachute, and many other marvels. As a military engineer, Leonardo made plans for weapons that would be deployed four hundred years later, including the armored tank, machine gun, mortar, guided missile, and a submarine. Leonardo the scientist is the subject of considerable=ble scholarly debat. Some scholars suggest that if Leonardo had or-gained his scientific thoughts and published that, he would have a massive influence on the development of science. Leonardo the artist transformed the direction of art. He was the first Western artist to make landscape the prime subject of painting.
