There are 13 people in the painting; Jesus, Peter, Andres, James, John, Matthew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, James, Judas, Jude and Simon. The owner of the house did not attend. The painting represents the last meal the night before Christ was betrayed by Judas as described in John 13:21. The last supper is Christ gathering his disciples to eat and to tell them that one of his disciples will betray him before sunrise and he will be crucified. He tells them how to eat and drink in remembrance of him. The painting illustrates the anger and shock of this news from the apostles. When Philip asked if it was him Christ replies “He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me” (Matthew 26). The painting reflects Judas and Christ reaching toward the plate at the same time. Christ is painted in a triangle form that Leonardo used to express Christ as heavenly perfection on earth.

Da Vinci painted the mural on double layer of dry plaster. He added a white undercoat to enhance the color using an oil and tempera mix. It is 15 feet tall and 29 feet wide. It took 3 years to complete. Almost as soon as the painting was finished, it began to deteriorate. Da Vinci was known for using math in his work. In the Last Supper painting the number 3 is represented by disciples in groups of three, three windows, and Christ in a triangle shape.

Due to the fact that fresco cannot be altered while the artist is working, Leonardo chose to cap the stone wall with a double layer of dry plaster. Then, deriving from a panel painting, he added an undercoat of white lead to boost the brightness of the oil and tempera that was applied on the top. This method of painting had been shown through the artwork mastered by Cennini in the 14th century. These techniques were valuable to Leonardo da Vinci because he had a desire to work slowly on the painting. He wanted more than enough time to develop the ongoing shading or chiaroscuro that was required in his style.…

His most famous works, The Mona Lisa (1503–1519), and The Last Supper (1495–1498), represent how the artist is considered the best painter ever. The Last Supper depicts Christ and his 12 disciples and their reactions, after he says to them, “One of you will betray me.” It is considered a perfect composition and shows such particular emotions on the faces of the disciples that no other artist could achieve. In the Mona Lisa, Da Vinci presents a woman, that is debated to be several different women, and a landscape in the back. However, it is the perfect blend of portrait and landscape, while mixing nature and humanity, which relates to his philosophies.…

Despite our personal views, paintings, sculptures, places, and churches reflect worldview and civic identity. In the “Last Supper,” Leonardo shows monumental simplicity (Bondanella and Musa 48). His composition is masterful. He strikes the contrast of the disciples’ attitudes as counter posed to that of Christ. Instead of choosing the portrayal of Judas as customary in the iconographic tradition, he portrayed the moment of highest tension in the New Testament as in the bible, “One of you that eat with me will betray me."…
