Leonardo Da Vinci was born April 15, 1452, in Anchiano, Italy. When Leonardo was a child, he received little formal education but his artistic talents were evident from an early age. Around 14, da Vinci began an apprenticeship with the artist Andrea del Verrocchio in Florence. He learned a lot of different technical skills including metalworking, leather arts, carpentry, drawing, painting and sculpting. At 20, da Vinci qualified for membership as a master artist in Florence’s Guild of Saint Luke. However, he continued to collaborate with his teacher for another five years. In 1482, Florentine ruler Lorenzo de' Medici commissioned da Vinci to create a silver lyre and bring it as a peace gesture to Ludovico Sforza, who ruled Milan as its regent. Imitationalism is being used because da Vinci is trying to imitate the Christ and the scene at the Last Supper. I think he was successful because he able to convey his message that he can use multiple techniques to make a realistic painting that looks like Jesus Christ and the apostles. Another theory is formalism, because da Vinci successfully uses the principles and elements to convey his message. Through movement, balance, and emphasis, he is able to demonstrate his ability to use his skills to create a realistic and religious piece.
I learned that movement is created with various faces or objects looking at each other. I also learned how to create balance, through symmetry, to make the piece of work look realistic and well composed. I can use what I learned in my final project, where I will make my own piece of work with a focal point that is emphasized through positions and difference in color to make my piece look unified. Additionally, I can use what I learned in the painting to make a balanced and beautiful
