The courtier were the nobility that supports the monarchy. These were the defenders and close friends of the royalty. In 1528 a nobleman by the name of Baldassare Castiglione wrote a book based on his experiences while traveling through the courts of Europe. This book was all about how the proper courtier should behave. Since their chief profession was to be a soldier to protect the prince, he needed training in all the skills that will make him an able warrior for his prince: riding, handling weapons of all sorts, wrestling, swimming, and other sports that increase strength and agility.A courtier needed to be nobleman as well. They also had to be modest and reserved, having to act as a positive role model for the commoners. The ideal courtier had to love and adore the prince above everything and everyone else. Along with the political and war aspects of being a courtier they had to have certain social talents as well such as easy conversation, the ability to dance, and almost a certain grace that made all his activities seem effortless. The book talked about the expectations of a prince, how to rule and shared his belief on military stands. Machiavelli said that the princes main concern had to be to protect the sovereignty of the state. He wrote that whether a state was old or new the two most important things to the foundation of the state were sound laws and good military forces. In order to secure the protection of the state the prince had to be the military leader and the troops had to be his own, never mercenaries. A mercenary was disorganized, undisciplined, faithless and unreliant. Mercenaries were thought to be unskilled soldiers making them unable to defend the country and would flee when put into battle, or if they were skilled they could not be trusted. A skilled mercenary was looked at as always seeking power by either overthrowing their master or having others overthrow them. They were only concerned with their own gains. Which brought up the prince 's second priority of staying alive. If an army was made up the prince 's own troops then the troops would be loyal to the prince, they also had something to fight for and would not flee from the battlefield. However, people would only want to follow the prince if they thought they had something to fight for. If the prince set up fair laws, the people would follow and be loyal, making up the
