Leonard Pitts Argument Essay

Some may dream to have high school English classes write about their work, but for Leonard Pitts Jr. it is a reality. After recently reading three of Pitts’s articles it has been made apparent that he is a great writer in more than one way. Pitts uses many effective strategies in his articles: “Don’t lower the bar on education standards”, “Torture might work, but that’s not the issue”, and “The poor of Flint were left under the cover of darkness”. In “Don’t lower the bar on education standards”, Pitts analyzes the problems with schools lowering the bar for minorities. Pitts argues whether torture is morally ethical in, “Torture might work, but that’s not the issue.” Lastly, Pitts addresses how the inhabitants of Flint were treated terribly by city officials, politicians, and the media in, “The poor of Flint were left under the cover of darkness.” Four styles Pitts uses frequently throughout his three articles are pathos, colloquial tone, analogies, and powerful statements. To start, Pitts uses pathos throughout all three articles. In “Don’t …show more content…
In, “Don’t lower the bar on education standards” he uses the phrase, “So I’m in college right?” This makes the audience notice how informal Pitts is with his writing. In, “Don’t lower the bar on education standards” it shows the audience that he can connect with what is occurring. Another example is, “Beg pardon, but we have been asking the wrong question.” This quote was taken from the article, “Torture might work, but that’s not the issue”. Pitts addresses the audience directly, thus hoping to keep them interested in his article. Lastly, Pitts says, “And it’s not until today that yours truly is writing about it.” Pitts includes the quote to keep the audience engaged when reading. It adds to the point of the article, which is the media waited too long to release the story. Pitts uses colloquial tones in his articles, which helps him develop his

Argumentative Essay of Shadow Catcher In the foreword to Sacred Legacy: Edward S. Curtis and the North American Indian, Pulitzer Prize winning Native American author N. Scott Momaday posits that, "in the hands of an extraordinary artist", photography can cease to be the "static record" of a moment in time and transcend to a "deeper level" of artistic understanding. Momaday makes these claims when discussing the work of renowned photographer Edward S. Curtis, who spent his lifetime perfecting the art of photography while capturing images of Native Americans. Upon examining Edward S. Curtis's photographic work and the effects of photography on American culture, one can clearly see that Momaday's claims of photography carrying not just a medial…

David F. Wallace once said, “I can choose to force myself to consider the likelihood that everyone in the supermarket checkout line is bored and frustrated as I am.” (Wallace 6) Well that makes you think doesn't it? People have become so adopted in the sense that everything has to be quick and ready at this moment. That we become blinded by our surroundings of the ruckus of children yelling for candy or an obnoxious man yelling at the cashier for not doing their job right, as we stand anxiously in the endless line that seems to never move.…

In the ninth chapter of his novel Why the Allies Won by Richard Overy breaks down how the moral and spiritual beliefs of the individual nations might have played a role in the effectiveness of their strategies. He proposes that citizens will “fight with less effect in the service of an evil cause.” In response to this hypothesis, I believe that the author has made a sound argument. While not a blanket statement, it is easy to see how the motivations of Axis armies were reflective of the views held by its nation, and consequently how those beliefs affect the treatment of its constituents. Looking at the views of the Axis powers, the primary figureheads of Germany and Japan were driven by a view of ethnic superiority, while the Allied powers had hatred of Hitler as a “moral cement.”…

Many times have people made decisions in their lives that resulted in a punishment that may seem just or unjust. Although all carried out for different reasons, people’s crimes result in somewhat similar outcomes. With that said, the circumstances surrounding a crime are conditions that should be considered when sentencing a person in court, but they shouldn't be used as an excuse to mitigate a case down to nothing. In the case of Carl Lee Hailey, I think his mindset is essential to look at and is important enough to take into consideration when charging him for the crimes he committed; it is also essential to keep things lawful and present justice to all.…

I was in Richmond, Virginia, listening to a speech made by Patrick Henry, and that was the day that would change my life forever. I was sitting in the room where Henry made his speech at the Second Virginia Convention, contemplating on the last words he cried out,”...give me liberty or give me death!” Was I to die for the country I’ve lived in for so long? Was I to take a ship to Great Britain and live there for the rest of my life? I had so many questions and yet I…

Scot Mcknight speaks about how Western evangelicals have lost touch with the gospel. He says we’ve reduced the gospel to making a decision for Christ. Mcknight argues that it’s been reduced to a 4 point presentation that’s a surefire way to salvation. Telling people that “God loves them and has a wonderful plan for their life” is one of the most dangerous things you can tell someone. When you assure someone that they’re in God’s love when in reality they are an enemy of God and stand under his judgment, you give them false assurance and validation to live however they want to.…

Research shows that your audience influences how you speak and what devices you use to convey your ideas. Peñuelas argues that the writer’s mental representation of the audience determines what composing strategies they will use, how they express themselves, and what kind of “arguments” they will use. For example, in the study, successful writers thought of their teacher as someone interested in their ideas. Therefore, her purpose was to convince. Unsuccessful writers saw their teachers as evaluators, making their purpose of writing to be a knowledge display (101).…

It took me a while to read this book. Every 15 pages or so, I would have to stop because I was so disgusted at what I read. Or shocked for lack of better word choice. It took time to digest; and sometimes I found myself looking up an event the author referenced because I had no clue what he was talking about especially being that this isn’t my history. Reading the stories of those people who were denied an education for five years was heartbreaking, not that education is cheap or anything…
