“Climate change is happening, humans are causing it, and I think this is the most serious environmental issue facing us.” (Bill Nye). Through his show “Bill Nye the Science Guy” he was able to teach science in an entertaining way that allowed…
In it, Moore places the blame off of himself entirely and onto others. This is totally inappropriate coming from someone with as much media and potentially political power as him. Just as it was previously said, Moore is very good at presenting ruthless complaints, but providing absolutely no solutions to the complaints given. This is no exception. Moore should be trying to put his time, energy, and especially money into climate change research and global warming awareness, but instead he plows his way into the fourth category: social…
According to Pope Francis, the issue on “climate change is a problem that can no longer be left to a future generation.” He wants America to use the innovation and leadership to “avert the most serious effects of the environmental deterioration caused by human activity.” Pope Francis wants action and the cost of this will lead to an American family spending about $700 to $1,100 more a year. He says that there is a moral case for addressing climate change and “ the environmental challenge we are undergoing, and its human roots, concerns and affects us all.” If Americans find a better way to conserve resources and energy cheaper, then the costs in the economy will be less.…
The video I chose was a Ted Talks video with scientists James Hansen who spoke out about climate change. James Hansen has written and published many articles and books about climate change and also worked with NASA for a period of time to help developed an experiment to fly to Venus. James Hensen's climate observations truly began in 1981 when he joined other scientists to analyze and publish an article in a science magazine that observed that the earth was warming 0.4 degrees Celsius in the century before. The developers of the article came to the conclusion that their research was consistent with the greenhouse effect which meant there is an increase in CO2 on earth.…
Sumner backs up this statement by expressing that 195 nations committed to an ambitious pledge to retaliate against climate change and control carbon emissions. In the next decade after the movie caught the public’s attention, scientists have made major advances in technology concerning climate change. The author later includes evidence on how an enhanced understanding of Earth’s inner workings and better climate-simulating computers have given experts a better grasp on how the climate will change. Better technology is a wonderful thing when it comes to predicting what the planet may be like in the future. This way if a simulation says Earth is doomed, humans can take precautionary steps to prevent the worst from…
As a child, growing up in the mid-1990’s there were many TV shows which kids talked about the next day at school. One of these shows in particular which was influential to our learning had to do with science. The show was Bill Nye the Science Guy. While we unintentionally learned while watching TV we always seemed to have fun and talk about the latest show. Since that show, Bill Nye has always let it be known that we should know or find out the facts to various science related fields.…
Living in denial by Kari Mari Norgaard was a very intriguing book concerning the emotions concerning climate change. I conducted four interviews trying to learn about their emotions and concerns toward to environment. My finding are all very different and interesting in the fact that they are so much like the book and so different at the same time. I categorized my finding by eight themes: fear, helplessness, guilt, not knowing, not caring, surface acting, all is well, and political alienation.…
It provided a great summary of some of Hansen’s most critical scientific findings, as well as his experience with policy makers. A story like his helps people understand the severity of climate change without getting too lost in scientific language. The most publicised information about climate change normally comes from media, which has a focus on the political side of things. Its important for people to understand the research behind climate change facts, and what some of the issues are with policy…
Former governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, in his address about global climate change (September 24, 2007), coaxes his audience to improve the status of climate change. He effectively projects his encouragements by using different repeating strategies, self-inclusive pronouns and questioning the audience. Schwarzenegger’s purpose was to gain the approval from the other United Nations leaders to join California in changing the way they reduce global climate change. He establishes an influential tone for the United Nations leaders for their support. Schwarzenegger includes many repeating words and repeating sounds within his speech.…
The Leonardo Dicaprio Foundation (LDF) was founded in 1998. The mission of the Dicaprio Foundation is to “protect the world’s last wild places ”. They do so through six avenues: Wildland Conservation, Oceans Conservation, Climate Change, Indigenous Rights, Transforming California, and Innovative Solutions. Through fundraising, LDF has successfully been able to make grants and support other projects with their same mission in mind worldwide. Through Leonardo’s personal social media, his supporters equally support his endeavors of LDF.…
Frontline’s Climate of Doubt was a compelling film showing how climate change has become more of a political issue than an environmental one. The film followed correspondent John Hockenberry around the United States as he interviewed several individuals that included scientific specialist, conservative republicans and liberal democrats who may or may not have been holding a position in office at that point in time. He asked simplistic questions surrounding the issue of climate change that could have been answered by anyone who was able to comprehend their own beliefs, however some individuals refused to answer the question directly and the pattern seen behind their response seemed to be associated with their political choices. It was clear to see that throughout the film there was a trend occurring. Republicans refuse to believe that human-made climate change is an issue and the real question is why they believe such lies.…
The 2006 documentary An Inconvenient Truth, directed by Davis Guggenheim and starring former Vice-President Al Gore, is trying to make the public aware of global warming. Al Gore wants to let people know global warming is real, and is trying to persuade the world to do something about global warming. To persuade the world, Gore uses three rhetorical strategies: pathos (the use of emotions), logos (the use of facts), and ethos (the use of speaker 's authority and honesty). By using these three rhetorical strategies from Aristotle, Gore wants to persuade the world to something about global warming and save the Earth. One strategy Gore uses is pathos.…
Joshua Koa 19 October 2014 Informative Speech Outline : Climate Change I. Introduction A) Attention Getter: According to a report by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, our Earth’s average temperature has increased significantly by 1.4 degrees fahrenheit over the century and is projected to increase up to another 2 - 11.5 degrees fahrenheit in the upcoming decades. The changes in our climate may seem minimal now but as we progress further into the future, those small changes will evidently transform to catastrophic scaled instances in our weather.…
Human activity is one of the causes of climate change and it was proved by showing the Earth’s temperature today vs. the Earth’s temperature in the 1900’s. A lot of carbon dioxide was released and many states aimed at reducing it (Michaels). While Michaels uses logos in his article to assert the fact that nothing is being done to end global warming, Inhofe attacks DiCaprio and Gore for scaring children with their films and sending the wrong messages. However, they had different intentions. Michaels focused on global warming and provided a solution while Inhofe criticizes the films and points out its flaws like if he was a…
A relatively new genre in cinema known as climate fiction has come into fruition ever since scientist have brought to our attention the occurrence of a human induced climate change. Climate fiction has been a hard film category to define, and an even harder genre to critique. A historical analysis of climate fiction is legitimate though the time period climate fiction in film covers is only 40 years. Its legitimacy spurs from climate fiction being a public response to a problem and also the fact that it drives others to make a societal change. This paper aims to identify what climate-fiction is and what examples embody its essence.…
