“The best laid schemes Of Mice and Men often go askew,” said poet Robert Burns. George and Lennie travel around together working on ranches. Lennie is a big guy, strong, and a really hard worker, Lennie is a little slow and is not the brightest. George is Lennie’s best friend who makes sure Lennie doesn’t get into any trouble. Lennie got into some trouble back in Weed where Lennie was stroking a girls dress, he wasn’t trying to cause any harm, but the girl screamed until eventually people from the town were after George and Lennie. The story hints at bad situations that will come up later in the story. John Steinbeck uses foreshadowing in the story Of Mice and Men to indicate the deaths of the farm dream, Curley’s wife, and Lennie Small.
In the story, Steinbeck uses foreshadowing to indicate some key events that led to the death of the farm dream. When Curley’s wife comes into the barn, it shows something bad is going to happen because whenever she comes around something bad happens. “She jerked her head sideways, and Lennie’s fingers closed on her hair and hung on”(page 91). “I done another bad thing. Curley’s wife comes in on Lennie petting the dog he had killed. “What you got there, sonny boy” (page 86). This is giving us clues that they might talk about soft things. When she finds out the dog is dead, they go into a conversation that leads to one of the main events in the story. “Feel right aroun’ there an’ see how soft it is” (page 90). This is a flashback to the event that happened in Weed when Lennie was stroking the girls dress. Lennie started to pet the hair harder and Curley’s wife started to scream, and Lennie wouldn’t let go and ended up breaking her neck and killing her.
