When George Milton shoots Lennie Small, his simple-minded companion, in order to protect him from the punishment he will face upon accidentally killing Curley’s wife, it raises the question was George justified in killing Lennie? Lennie Small is a large man that due to his mental disability fails to recognize his own strength. Lennie is completely reliant upon George Milton. George takes care of Lennie and constantly gets Lennie out of trouble. George promises to deliver Lennie the farm of his dreams where Lennie will be able to tend to the rabbits and live off of the land, this dream becomes even more distant as the two have to flee town to town in order to protect Lennie from the consequences of his actions. George can no longer protect Lennie …show more content…
In Of Mice and Men when George and Candy are contemplating what to do about Lennie killing Curley’s wife Candy says this about Curley, “You don't know that Curley. Curley gon’ta wanta get ‘im lynched. Curly’ll get ‘im killed.” (94) We know that when Lennie is confronted with his wrongdoings he panics and cannot comprehend the severity of his actions only that his dream of tending to rabbits becomes farther and farther away. If Lennie was to be confronted with the hoard of people all searching for him, he would undoubtedly be overwhelmed by the mass amounts of chaos. The brutality he could face would be infallible to him. When Candy uses the wording lynch pertaining to Lennie’s possible death it pulls that connotation of that of a callous hanging. Depending on the type of hanging that was to be performed the person being hung could die instantly but if a more likely suspension type hanging was to occur the person being hung would slowly strangulate which could take up to twenty minutes. In the manner of gunshot wound where Lennie was killed instantaneously by the bullet he would have felt little to no pain as the bullet would likely move faster than his pain receptors would have time to send the signal to his brain. Lennie died happy with his best friend not surrounded by a chaotic mob but that of a serene river

I, personally, don’t think George was justified in killing Lennie, but some of the evidence from the text proves otherwise. Most people saw Lennie as a child and not a grown man, which is understandable, and that may be one reason why George wanted to get rid of him. Many times he was called a child or people would say he acted like one. For example, when Lennie brought the puppy in the bunkhouse and George made him take it back, Slim said, “He’s jes’ like a kid, ain’t he.” Lennie was constantly in trouble which made it hard for George to keep a job for long.…

George made the right decision by shooting Lennie Because. George did not want Lennie to suffer for what curly had in store for him so think of Lennie death as a mercy kill fast and less suffering also if George wouldn't have shot Lennie he could get tortured in many different ways. But most people say that George and Lennie should have run away instead of killing Lennie. My first reason that George should have taken Lennie life is that first of all. If Lennie had tried to escape with George both of the men would be considered wanted so it would be hard to have any type of job or place to live because their reputation would be murderers, But George thought that running away would be a bad idea so he did not want Lennie to deal with all this so he took his life.…

If George wouldn’t have shot Lennie, Lennie could have been lynched or tortured and hurt in many ways. If George would not have shot Lennie he wouldn’t be a good friend, George put Lennie out of his misery from suffering. It doesn’t seem fair to Lennie that he was killed, but if you really think about it, it was the best thing that could have been done for him. After reading Of Mice and Men I realized that this is how our society works. George killing Lennie was essentially Society’s way of getting rid of the loose ends, the weak, even though Lennie was physically strong doesn’t mean he was mentally strong.…

I feel that Steinbeck did justify Lennie’s death. In the beginning of the book, Lennie and George are running from where they used to work because Lennie was accused of rape when we would not stop petting the girls red dress. Later, Lennie is petting a dead mouse, and we learn that he has killed many mice before too. Once they reach the new pace they will be working at, Lennie is drawn to pet everything. This leads to him killing the puppy that George had promised him.out of fear that he won't get to tend the rabbits any longer, he hides the puppy, and then Curleys wife comes to find Lennie, which scares him.…

George didn’t kill Lennie out of anger or hatred but out of love. He tried to reason with Curley by saying “But listen, Curley. The poor bastards nuts. Don’t shoot ‘im. He didn’t know what he was doin’.” George believed that if he didn’t do it, then Lennie would have suffered greatly because of the quote in the novel from Curley, “I’m gonna shoot the guts outa that big bastard myself, even if I only got one hand.…

Upon discovering his wife’s dead body in the barn, Curley immediately began to search for Lennie as he wanted to shoot him in an extremely brutal manner. He states, “‘I’ll shoot ‘im [Lennie] in the guts,’” followed by Slim saying, “‘But Curley’s gonna want to shoot ‘im. Curley’s still made about his hand. An’ s’pose they lock him up an’ strap him down and put him in a cage’” (Steinbeck 96-97). Notably, Slim’s statement verifies that Lennie would have been punished strictly, most likely through a mental institution for his wrongdoings.…

In “Of Mice and Men” Lennie should not have been killed because George basically helped Curley by killing him, he was only a kid, and he could have escaped. Lennie should not have been killed, he had the brain of a kid. “Sure he’s just like a kid, there ain’t no more harm in him than a kid neither” (Steinbeck # ). George could have taught him to be careful, it was not his fault he was mentally not smart. Another reason that George should not have been killed was he was basically helping Curley.…

According to the article Chain Gangs we seen “Exposed prisoners to painful ulcers and dangerous infections from the heavy shackles around their ankles”(Chain Gangs Slavery by Another Name). Even though Lennie is a strong willed man he would have to carry these shackles all day and maybe end up with major infections due to the head and the heaviness of the shackles. The article states “The chains prevented individuals from moving away from aggressive or violent prisoners”(Chain Gangs Slavery by Another Name). Lennie was not the kind of person that like to be held down and he could have end up getting killed. For the reason would not fight back because we seen in Steinbeck story Of Mice and Men “Lennie would not fight back until George told him to”.…

From the quotes, Curley was furious that his wife died and he knows that it was Lennie did this so he really wants to kill him by himself and shot him in the guts but George told him not to shoot him because he does not know what was he doing because Lennie was dumb. George should have killed Lennie in the story “Of Mice and Men” because from the story the character “Lennie” was a troublemaker for George. He always brought troubles to George and he also has some problems with his mind so that made him act like a kid, always do thing after George and if Lennie is still alive he might hurt more people, even though they were best friend and George should not have killed Lennie because of that but someone else will kill him…
