California in the 1930’s, the book, Of Mice and Men was published. There are two main characters, but I’m focusing only on one of them: Lennie Small. Lennie is a character who has a mental disability, who is an outcast, and is bullied. Lennie is a big man (ironic, right?) with big, broad shoulders, shapeless of face, and with large, pale eyes. There is one noticeable characteristic about Lennie. He has a mental disability, which was mental retardation. Even though this disability makes things hard on him, Lennie tries so hard to be the best person he can be, but no matter what, he always gets put down by others. Including this, there are some other characteristics about Lennie that you should know.
There are certain rules that George has for Lennie, but he has trouble remembering the things George says. There are time where Lennie remembers and he tries extremely hard to listen to them. For example, George didn’t want Lennie talking to Curley’s wife, and he told her that. Lennie doesn’t remember anything that happened in the past, like the incident in Weed. When George and Lennie are talking about it, George reminds him that the reason they had to leave Weed was because Lennie was petting a girl’s dress and she got scared.
