Even the most caring and creative person in this story can be cruel. Lennie has his own characteristics and he can be cruel without even knowing it. He sometimes even kills things without trying, and this part in the book shows how George gets frustrated with Lennie because of his constant killing of animals: “Trouble with mice is you always kill ’em.” He paused. “Tell you what I’ll do, Lennie. First chance I get I’ll give you a pup. Maybe you wouldn’t kill it” (Steinbeck 47). On the outside, he is just a person with a brain disorder and no one would ever think that he could kill an animal, or even a human, but he kills animals and insects all of the time. Lennie, the nice and friendly man killed Curley’s wife in response to her screaming.
