Surely, there are various ways one can interpret, but the prevailing one is the story is about National Socialism. Very early on, we learn about the curse that happens when the full moon rises above the town. The blue light from the mountain mesmerizes the young men of the town and ultimately leads to their death. The blue light on the mountain represents National Socialism which is drawing these men in. National Socialism, more commonly known as Nazism, was brewing about in Germany during this time. National Socialism did not dazzle everyone, but it did however mesmerize others. Some people were outright afraid of it. This is shown in Riefenstahl’s film beautifully. The townspeople close their shutters to reject blue light, but it still finds a way to get inside and mesmerize some. The same thing with National Socialism. Most people wanted nothing to do with it and would hide from it, but it still found a way to get through to some people. The fact that the men died from chasing after the blue light is Riefenstahl’s way of rejecting National Socialism saying it will only lead to death if you do it the wrong
