(AG) Lemony Snicket captures the hearts and minds of children at a young age, but how can people in the real world continue the excitement of reading beyond that one author? As the first generation of my family in America, I had a difficult time during my beginnings of reading and writing. Throughout my years, I’ve shown a bit of improvement. I understand that incorporating this foundation is the key to opportunities and understanding. Despite that I sometimes still struggle in this genre, I don’t want to stop developing myself to becoming a better reader and writer. My reading skills were sufficient and I was motivated to attain a lot of reading points. My initial inspiration was competition. There was a classmate I was encouraged by who was a bookworm. She was an intelligent student that intimidated me with her knowledge. I couldn’t help, but stick around her. I was secretly trying my best to catch up with her intelligence. She was always reading lengthy and complex books that can accumulate large points. In my AR program, there was a set of points a student must read to reach a certain rank. The points from lowest to highest was 25, 50, 75, 100, 150, and 200. Reading up to 200 points is known as the King or Queen. My classmate was reading a couple of books that made her achieve higher points easily. As for me I had to read a handful of books or more to catch up. I realized to collect more points, I had to be consistent. I was reading one book after another and trying my best to remember how the story goes just to ace my book …show more content…

My bookworm classmate was in second place and was considered a Queen. I was disappointed that I didn’t made it to my 200-point mark, but it made me appreciate myself more. Those were the days where I had considered my reading performance was at its peak. In high school, I reached a turning point. Although I wasn’t reading a lot for enjoyment, but I soon learn to admired the importance of reading and writing. I wanted to learn and expand my knowledge of things. I have recognized reading benefit intelligence and other positive aspects of myself. Thanks to the internet and media, I noticed I enjoy reading articles, blogs, subtitles from movies, and so forth that peak my interest. I wanted to research and become a life-long learner on many things. In conclusion, I’ve realized reading is an essential skill for success. It has taught me self-improvement. Reading is vital to deepen my understanding of topics and knowledge. Even though I still have a lot to learn. My memories and experiences promote growth so I can advance

Dana Gioia builds an argument to persuade his audience on how the decline in our American arts, specifically literacy, has caused many negative impacts to individuals that don't read regularly. Dana Gioia's paper has informed his audience of young adults, over the importance of literature, and how it helps in social aspects, but most importantly being “advanced” in literature is very “significant in the business world”. A major claim that Dana Gioia mentions in his article, is that “38 percent of employers complained that local schools inadequately taught reading comprehension”. This only supports his view on how our society is quickly losing an “advanced literacy skill”, that could help anyone in any “educational, cultural and economic factors”.…

Much like James Stewart, my love of reading preceded my interest in writing. I would visit the library often growing up, checking out books in the mornings at the elementary school before the first bell rang or taking part in the public library’s reading program during the summer. When I had my tonsils removed in the fourth grade, my school librarian (who was all too familiar with me at this point) delivered me a stack of books at home, knowing I would get restless without reading material while I was recovering. Unlike Stewart, my love of writing followed soon after as a natural progression. My mother was a teacher at my elementary school, so I would often stay with her after the class ended, waiting for her to finish grading papers or write…

When I was young I was never the best at reading even though my parents owned many books and magazines that they read on a daily basis. My mother enjoyed reading her gossip magazines that she would receive in the mail once a month and my father had a whole bookshelf full of history books. My parents would always encourage me to read the books I would check out at the school library to improve my reading and writing but that advice usually went in through one ear and out the other. The only books I would really attempt to read had to be humorous or horrifying, my favorites were the Goosebumps collection. I loved reading these books alone in my room where I couldn’t be sidetracked by all the commotion that went on in my house.…

Just like learning to walk or ride a bike, learning to read is one of life’s milestones. However, unlike walking and biking, reading skills are not suddenly obtained and then static throughout life. After learning to read initially, an individual’s reading skills, interests, and purposes further develop and change throughout their life. Furthermore, the means by which an individual improves their reading capabilities change over time as well. In the same way, I initially improved my reading ability and changed my interests through the help of my parents, then later my teachers, and finally, in spite of a dark period of little improvement, through my own effort.…
