Personal Narrative: My Junior Year In Puerto Rico

Improved Essays
An interesting event that happened in my life that seem bad, but turned out good was attending my junior year and senior year in Puerto Rico. Reminiscing back to when I walked into the halls of Lysander Borrero Terry all I could hear were little voices speaking in Spanish. I could understand what everyone was saying, but I was so confused on why everyone was only speaking in Spanish. As I started my first day of school at the end of the day I came to realize that all my classes were in Spanish and that’s when I felt like I wasn’t able to do it because all I could do is understand and speak slang Spanish. As weeks went by students started to bully me and make fun of me because I couldn’t speak proper Spanish, write or read it. Not only didn’t the students believe in me, but my director didn’t either. I didn’t let them put fear into my heart because I knew what I was capable of and what I was not capable of. This only pushed me to succeed even if it was going to be a challenge. To tell the truth my junior year was horrible, I would fail every informal assignment there was, but I didn’t let that stop me from moving forward with my education. One thing for sure is that it wasn’t easy especially when I had writing and reading …show more content…
I was not scared to ask any questions when I needed to or I wasn’t scared to ask for help during or after school. I started to get nothing but A’s or B’s on all my work; as graduation got closer I was eligible to cross the stage. Graduation day came and when the director acknowledge my name on stage to receive my diploma on stage she began to cry and tell me how proud she was after all. She apologized for being ignorant and not seeing potential in me. When I crossed the stage with my diploma in my hands all the students stood up from theirs chairs and screamed “you did it Eunice.” I was more proud of myself than anyone could ever

From the times I hear my grandfather singing Vicente Fernandez in the shower, to the times my grandmother cooks homemade enchiladas, arroz con frijoles, and salsas, I am constantly reminded of the beautiful culture that I proudly belong to and hope to share with CCS. I would contribute my Mexican/Puerto Rican American identity in terms of expressing my culture’s music, art, and food. Coming from a close-knit Latin American family, I know I will thrive in this small, intimate residential living atmosphere. Being a bisexual person of color, I've learned to be tolerant and love others despite our differences in race, religion, ethnicity, or socioeconomic levels. Our residents should engage in an icebreaker activity where each person presents…

For the past year, I could only provide an indefinite answer to a frequently asked question, How was your freshman year? In fact, those of us who experienced our freshman year could be addressed as “college veterans” will never initiate a conversation with regard to the past year. Perhaps they consider that the freshman year was not as consummate as they initially planned. I cannot judge my first year in college was successful or frustrating, but I feel I benefited from the meritorious experiences and practical knowledge gained from my college life. In my opinion, no matter what goals one wishes to achieve in college, whether its grade, love, health, or sense of accomplishment, one has to be prepared for both failures and…

When I was walking through the freshmen halls, I thought that I was ready for all the stuff that going to happen throughout the four years of hell. Well to start out, I was attending band camp over the summer and we were working on our band show so school already started for me since July, two months before school actually started. Band camp was not difficult, but sweaty and just exhausting during the early morning hours. We would then have an hour of lunch, after that we separate the sections and had section meeting where we study the music and play it and also to discuss things about band.…

I'd never been one to accept my failures and hardships, and my goal at the time had been perfection; an ambition that proved to be too large a wall to scale. Not having the ability to reach the grade levels I preferred, was, unfortunately, just what I needed to shove me back into the reality of…

My only focus fas a freshman was my grades because I did not think I could handle extracurricular activities while maintaining excellent grades; however, I was wrong. In the Spring of last year, it was my Junior year, one of the most critical years in high school. It’s the year that colleges look at the most, also it was the year that I was in some of the most challenging classes. Mostly honors, a lot of homework, and tests to go along with it. Studying would take me until late at night, and even on weekends, all day long. When it’s the end of the term everyone checks their grades for their report cards, and progress reports.…

Writing Sample Without a doubt in my mind the best class I have taken in the past two years of my academia was my high school Spanish class. I developed a very good relationship with my instructor Sr. K, that was probably the biggest reason it was my favorite class; However, the way his class was stuctured and how he taught contributed it to being my favorite class in the last two years. We would always start the day with a class plan so everyone would know what was going to take place in class and the next. Sr. k was very detailed in lessons…

One foot rooted in urban Puerto Rican heritage and the other having been later immersed in the Southern black experience as an adult, I have learned to merge the conceivably disparate cultures of my family. Each afforded me a unique point of view, developing the self-assurance that has empowered me to succeed in the face of adversity. Being of Puerto Rican descent in the inner city kept the lack of financial stability of my youth in view and motivated me to pursue my education. As a black American female I learned the value of diversity, having experienced first-hand the misconceptions that can shape in a homogeneous environment. For instance from being called “too much of a free-spirited city girl,” in the country to later being “too old-fashioned…

The end of the day comes whether you have gotten up to do something productive or if you have simply remained inanimate while time moves around you. I have found that the present slips away while you are worrying about the future. We are constantly telling ourselves that if we just get through this, then everything after will be better. We forget to appreciate the moment while constantly reaching for a hypothetically more fulfilling life. Once we graduate high school, or get through a challenging class, or finish a workout, everything after will get easier.…
