Leif Erikson, son of the famous Viking, Eric the Red, was born in 970 CE in Iceland. When Leif was a boy (12 years old), his father was banished from Iceland for killing a man, so he and his family set out on a boat with slaves and supplies, heading west. They called the land they later found Greenland. There they settled, later encouraging other Icelanders to join them.
In 986 CE, Bjarni Herjólfsson, an explorer, arrived in Greenland looking for his father. Whilst Bjarni was exploring, he got lost along the way and found Leif. He told Leif about a mysterious land he saw, but it wasn’t until a decade later, that Leif acted on this. He bought Bjarni’s ship and with a crew of about 35 slaves, he set sail.
