What is a legend? A legend is a reflection of a society’s values and beliefs, usually in the format of fantasy-filled stories with improbable events. I read the “The Legend of the Panda”, a true sorrow filled legend that creates an advanced understanding of Chinese culture. The value of sacrifice, something that we as humans do not take lightly is a very common theme in this legend. The emotions involved in true sacrifice are all based on a caring for another's life, which is demonstrated in “The Legend of the Panda”. I think that this legend is a truly important read because it reveals an inspiring message of how valuable sacrifice is; therefore, this explains the true caring ability of humans.

When reading ¨The Legend of the Panda¨, it struck me how important it is to have people who care for you. Dolma creates a friendship between her and the Beishung, making such a strong relationship with him that she would sacrifice herself. It was her love and care for the Beishung that saved him from the leopard´s claws. The fact that Dolma didn't even feel a hint of hesitation to save the Beishung really speaks of how much she truly cared about him. This makes me think about my own home life and the people that I surround myself with. I believe that it is important to have sacrificed in a relationship. To have people around who will make sacrifices for you. The second key lesson that I learned from ¨The Legend of the Panda¨, is the ability to grieve without letting it consume you. Within ¨The Legend of the Panda”, many people are affected by Dolma´s death. Dolma´s sisters are so consumed by their grief that they basically commit suicide. However, the Beishung wear the ash marks in memory of Dolma and her sacrifice. The need for a healthy balance of grief and still living is a very thin line. You cannot let it consume you, however, you still need to allow yourself to grieve, to heal. The Beishung went about grieving in the way that most would say is healthy, remembering the dead but not letting it destroy them. Dolma´s sisters, however, were so entrenched in their grief. It's not what Dolma would've wanted for her sisters. This makes the legend even sadder than it already is. My grandmother just recently passed away, and the result has been heartbreaking. I miss her terribly and sometimes it is hard to think about how life will be without her in it. However, it helps to have a network that will help you, like your family. They will guide you through your grief. It isn't hard to say that this legend teaches very important lessons and reflects the values that the Chinese
