William Shakespeare once said, “Love all, trust a few, do wrong to none.” Although trust can be one of the hardest things for a person to do, it is what we put our trust in that shapes our future. In the novel, Legend by Marie Lu the main characters, June and Day, learn some hard lessons about trust and betrayal. They learn about what the truth can cost and the consequences of putting your trust in someone else. Through character development and foreshadowing a knowledge of the characters is gained that eventually leads to a gut-wrenching climax. In Legend, June and Day learn of truth, this sheds a light upon the theme which is, the truth can lead to knowledge that was never known before and might change your course of actions and futures. In this novel, the main characters June and Day grow as people by changing not only their actions but also changing their minds. To change their minds and actions they come to several realizations through the revelation of new information into their former lives and information on the lives that they are living now. June, one the Republic’s prodigies, realizes that she has been lied to all of her life by the Republic. “My head hurts. Too many memories, too many revelations...I’d been stupid enough to think she did it out of sympathy. Even my test mission to track Day must’ve been a …show more content…

Without supporting characters, protagonists would never develop to their full potential. In novels, the main character frequently relies upon close friends and relatives to listen and sympathize with the challenges they face throughout the story. Secrets in literature are usually told to someone that a character believes to be trustworthy and who they can confide their troubles. Although the confidant is mainly there to comfort the main character, he frequently serves to encourage the protagonist’s growth. In the novel The Kite Runner Rahim Khan is the confidant to both Hassan and Amir, because both are able to discuss life changing events with him and get sympathy from him.…

The Dangers of being Certain Though doubt has always held a negative connotation in my mind, a dark shadow that looms over certainty, truth, and progress, John Patrick Shanley, through his film, not only claims but makes us feel quite the opposite: that doubt is in fact a valuable asset in gaining an objective view when determining “good” from “bad” and discovering the truth. Stanley utilises the two main characters in his film to depict the dangers of acting upon certainty without doubt. I will be exploring two research questions within my reflection: “How does relative societal rules define what is good and bad?” and “To what degree does self interest drive us to be bad?” through the comparison of the the two main characters Sister Aloysius…

Altered Reality At some point in every individual’s life, they come across a large realization that changes their outlook on life. In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown” and James Joyce’s “Araby”, the main characters within these short stories both come to this type of realization, and the effects of this can be seen in how their behavior and their outlook on life alters. In the beginning of both writings, the characters are living seemingly normal, happy lives, but by the end, both characters have adopted a more gloomy existence. The way in which a sad realization affects the individuals in “Araby” and “Young Goodman Brown” are shown majorly through each story’s theme of disappointment , change in tone, and characterization of the…

The chapter “‘You’ll Never Believe What Happened’ Is Always a Good Place to Start” from the Native Narrative “The Truth About Stories” by Thomas King explores the twisting path of how stories configure who we are, how we interpret, and how we interact with the world around us. Thomas King uses detailed examples in his writing that exceed what he is trying to say. For instance, as a narrator, he tells a story about the moment he discovered what happened to his Father. The narrator's Father left when he was only a little boy, remarried twice, and had seven more children who never knew that the narrator nor his brother existed until the day of all their father's funeral.…

The author, Marie Lu, took her time with her characters’ shifting motives, which makes the story even more credible and satisfying. The protagonists may be caricatures, defined by their safely bland appeal, and appear to significantly change with unshakably noble values at heart while they juxtapose against the villainous Republic. While Day wreaks Havoc on the Republic, June alone has the ability and determination to stop him, making her the only person to ever pass the Trial’s with a score of 1500, and she has excelled in all her decisions and garnered the attention of top military commanders since that triumphant day. After her brother…

Humans are continuously evolving with their surroundings, leaving the past behind. However, certain aspects of the past can cause mental pain to the extent that humans need to eliminate the thought of being defeated or taken advantage of using inhumane measures. This distress affects one’s emotion, disturbing their moral and ethical thinking when resolving the issue. ‘Revenge’ is the natural human extinct when it comes to mending an unhinged past, and in order to take revenge, the idea of false ‘trust’ is applied to make the revenge as insufferable…
