The famed City of Love may need a new name. Just this month, France has passed a bill that legalizes prostitution, but makes the purchasing of sex illegal. Once a country famous for its lax view on prostitution, the country has shocked the world and angered some of its citizens with this new change. What are the benefits? What are the disadvantages? The main advantage to the legalizing of sex and illegalizing of buying sex is that it makes the buyer the one who has to pay the fine. That fine starts off at 1500 euros ($1,700) and a repeated offense can be as high as 3,750 Euros ($4,260). Why is this such a good thing? Think about it. Would a person willingly sell sex for money if they didn’t have to? If a woman had a good job, was able to pay the bills, and had a house over her head would she become a prostitute? No, she would not. The sex workers do this to make money, because they don’t have any. They can’t pay a fine this expensive. The person who can is the one who can also pay for the sex. With this legislation the clients become the guilty party, thus giving freedom to the sex workers. How will this affect other issues like sex trafficking? If they do continue to sell sex then if a client gets to be violent they have the choice to call the police and face no fine for doing so. The majority of violence behind anything is it being illegal. Like with drugs, the victims of crimes dealing with prostitution won’t go to the police, afraid of being fined themselves. For example, if a sex worker has a client that physically abuses her and beats her, she cannot go to the police for fear that the person fined or arrested would be her. She would the guilty party.
