For ages, men and women have participated in prostitution, or the exchanging of sex for money. There are an estimated 1 to 2 million prostitutes in the United States alone, and everyday, more women and children are added into the mix (Chen). When people think of prostitutes, they picture girls with very little self-respect, standing on corners. In this paper we will analyze the different views on the matter of prostitution. For this project we researched the historical, political, cultural/social, ethical, philosophical, scientific, and futuristic perspectives to answer the critical question: should prostitution be legalized? There are many views to whether it should or shouldn’t be legalized based on facts and opinions.
Historical- Shekinah
Prostitution is considered to be one of the oldest professions out there and is still going on to this day. A child’s past experiences can be the inspiration for them choosing prostitution as a profession. Within the United States alone, ninety percent of kids have been physically abused, seventy-four percent of kids have been attacked, fifty percent have been assaulted, and seventy-five percent of kids are dependent on medications. prostitutes to choose the right clientele; it is their responsibility to have safe-sex (Sanders). When
prostitutes work in legalized brothels they are often required to be checked for diseases. "16
years of mandatory testing, [and] over 100,000 tests -- there has never been one case of HIV in a
Nevada brothel. The ladies are checked weekly for gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, and monthly
for HIV.... Nevada only contributes one half of one percent of all the sexually transmitted
diseases in America, partially attributed to the success of the brothel....” said Dennis Hof, the
owner of a brothel in Nevada. This is evidence that prostitutes are not a reason for the spread
