Introduction
Performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) play a colossal role when it comes to the professional sports level (semi-pro to some extent), in which there are major concern is ethics, and more importantly health risks. The use of PEDs should not be legalized in sports in order to ensure fair play, and the risk factors associated with the players’ health is not worth it. This is a reliable source because the author is a senior research scholar and president of The Hastings Center for 13 years (until he stepped down in June 2012). The author also uses multiple real life examples in order to convey his points on ethical considerations in anti-doping. In order to further emphasize his point, the author did not mention the cases in which athletes are falsely accused. My topic involves keeping PEDs illegal because of the ethical issues they raise, the long and short term effects on the musculoskeletal system, and the increase of cardiovascular risks. The main focus of this article was concerned with anabolic steroids and stimulants (such as amphetamines and cocaine) and their part in cardiovascular health of the athletes who consume them. These drugs were focused on because they are reported in the majority of athlete drug screenings. This is a reliable source because multiple respected authors collaborated to publish this article. The article also critiqued current research and case studies in order to support their own findings, thus making this source more reliable. In order to prove their point, the authors did not talk about other PEDs that may be safe, and only the ones that causes negative effects to CV health. My topic involves keeping PEDs illegal because of the ethical issues they raise, the long and short term effects on the musculoskeletal system, and the increase of cardiovascular risks. I will use this source to display the different types of cardiovascular events and risk factors (ranging from elevated blood pressure to stroke) associated with consuming anabolic steroids.
