Medicinal marijuana isn’t considered a drug when it is used in its natural state. Marijuana has many medicinal uses. First of all, Delta-9-tetrahydrocannibinol (THC) is the chemical in marijuana that is helpful. The National Institute on Drug Abuse says, “THC increases appetite and reduces nausea . . . may also decrease pain, inflammation, and muscle control problems” (NIH). Marijuana could help underweight people gain weight by giving them an appetite, or people that having eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa, outgrow his or hers problems. It could also help people who get carsick or nauseous easily. Say someone crashes his or hers car and is in an unbearable amount of pain, marijuana could help ease the pain for him or her. Inflammation of the wrist or ankle or other body part could affect everyday life, like driving or opening doors, or even interacting with family and friends. It could cause chronic pain, too.
