I believe that the benefits of legalizing marijuana outweigh the consequences. Aside from the obvious benefits of lowering crime and relieving the strain on the legal system, legalizing marijuana would generate tax revenue. The money could be put into an account separate from the general funds and used for a specific purpose, much in the way that the lottery funds are used to benefit education. The money generated from marijuana sales could be used to fund drug treatment programs for addicts and help them towards becoming responsible members of society. It could also help fund halfway houses and drug awareness programs in schools.
