Whether to lower the drinking age to 18 in California? Alcohol sales are huge in California and in the United States boosting, “$5.8 billion in sales” according to Cesur and Kelly of Economic Inquire (2014, p.479). Recently, a newly proposed California ballot initiative has brought up the critical question of lowering the drinking age to 18, but would lowering the age bring an unwanted dangerous consequence to Californians. Is it logical to lower the California minimum drinking age from the standard 21 years-old down to 18 years-old? According to Wechsler and Nelson of The American Journal of Public Health (2010), “Since 1984 the national minimum legal drinking age has been 21 (for most states in the country)” (p.986). California looks to be exempt from the list of many states that have their minimum legal drinking age at 21. First, explain the reason why the drinking age is at 21 then secondly discuss the movement to lower the drinking age from 21 to 18. Thirdly, show the positives and negatives of lowering the minimum drinking age and lastly examine if it is logical for California to lower the drinking age. To begin with, the minimum alcohol consumption age in California and in a majority part of the nation has been at 21 for a variety of circumstances.
