Canada today is a country where hundreds of people die waiting for an organ transplant, according to Michael Friscolanti’s article, “Will sell organs for cash”. There have been laws in Canada that object the purchase of human organs, but surely do not have any objection with the donation of organs (Friscolanti, “Will sell organs for cash”). The selling of human organs should be allowed at certain scenarios to have less people die waiting for an organ transplant but not open for all.
In Canada we have had 285 Canadians dead (Friscolanti, “Will sell organs for cash”) while waiting for an organ transplant 2011, who could have lived a happy life. But not only we have lost Canadians that could have …show more content…
If this market is legalized, then the “same economic laws of demand and supply that govern the price” (Hall, “Opening up the Market for Organs Support Grows for Selling Body Parts Donors for Profit Don't Really Benefit”) of any economic good or service being sold in the market would apply to human organs. And if this open market was created, this might be a business for many businessmen to generate profits by buying the organs for less and selling them to people in need for a higher price. The people usually selling their organs are the poor and the buyers (businessmen) are usually the rich (Hall, “Opening up the market for organs Support grows for selling body parts Donors for profit don't really benefit”). We can potentially have situations where the poor would sell all his/her organs in order to obtain money that could help his/her family live. If we actually do end up having such situations where people would die by selling their important organs (ex. heart), we are basically having our population in Canada decrease, which would again come back to affect our Canadian economy negatively. We could have negative effects on the economy because those people (poor), who could potentially die from selling their important organs, could spend money in the economy and help keeping the money circulating through the economy if they were alive. The Canadian government should setup an official procedure in order to get a closely monitored organ transplant and pay some reward to the donor, which can reduce the number of people waiting for a transplant in Canada. Iran, the only country where organ trade is legal has a no shortage of organ donors as money is being offered for donation and due to poverty in the country they have a lot of donors (Dehghan, “Kidneys for Sale: Poor Iranians Compete to Sell Their Organs”). Since poverty in Canada is a lot lower than it is in Iran, Canada might not get as many donors as Iran has but definitely would end up having more donors than they do now.
A scenario where the donation should be allowed could be, when a person is going to die and has no hope of living could choose to donate his/ her organs upon death and have his/her family receive money after the person’s death. A scenario where a person should not be allowed to donate could be, when a person is willing to donate upon bad financial
