Drug legalization is one of the most conflict-ridden issues within the United States. Although, my belief identifies closely with those who see drugs as being able to assist in certain medical conditions, I also identify with those who believe that certain drugs need to be regulated in order to avoid addiction and more importantly abused. One argument, that has been made prominent, is that drug legalization would lessen the number of people who become involved and introduced to the criminal justice system. However, many people feel that because of the already growing problem with licit drugs, legalizing additional drugs would only contribute to the rate of addiction.…
In the U.S, President Richard Nixon declared war on drugs, in 1971. This was due to the increase of demand coming from the United States and from the certain and bulk supply coming from various regions, but especially Latin America. The focus of Nixon was not only domestic drug abuse but it was also looking at the international level concerning the source of the problem and the drug trafficking industry. His successor, Ronald Reagan, focused more on changing the US’s foreign policy to crush the problem of illegal drugs, in all its forms.…
This research paper aims to study the negative effects of drug legalization in the US, by extracting reliable data and statistics. As time progress, issues such as “drug legalization” continue to disturb the equilibrium of the society. It is certain that everyone at some point, either directly or indirectly has been affected by the consumption of drugs. It can be anything ranging from the abusive behavior of a family member or may be excessive burden on the economy of a country. My paper conducts a detailed analysis of the negative impacts of drug legalization and on the American society and human health.…
While most sectors of society will agree with the government and the judiciary that drug or controlled substance trafficking warrants a prison sentence, an immense majority of all drug related arrest in America relate to possession, not intention to sell. This means that drug users who usually haven’t broken other law are sent to jail or prison, rather than offered the opportunity to treat their disease with the appropriate medications and/or treatments. Many of the advocates for the rights of drug users and substance abuse addicts…
Drug Legalization Opposing Viewpoints Online Collection, 2015 From Opposing Viewpoints in Context Drug abuse is a major problem throughout the world. The sale and use of narcotics and other illicit drugs is linked to addiction, prostitution, government corruption, and violent crime. In much of the world, including the United States, efforts to stop illicit drug use have focused on stricter laws and enforcement. Yet there is growing concern that this approach may be counterproductive.…
Drug policies have become somewhat of a hot topic of discussion in Europe and the United States and many other countries all over the world. In many countries, there have been debates about the legalization and control of previously or currently illegal substances, and this could change the dynamic of drug consumption and trafficking in the future. In the European Union specifically, there is no unified drug policy that all of the member states must follow. The law is designed so that individual states decide the legislation for drugs. There are two members of the European Union, in particular that have completely different perspectives when it comes to drug policy.…
For decades, overcrowded prison populations have been at the top of the list for penal reform in the United States. The Federal Bureau of Prisons reports that nearly 85,500 individuals are currently incarcerated on drug-related charges, making up 46.4% of the total inmate population in our prison systems. Of those incarcerated on drug charges, nearly half are low-level drug offenders with no current or prior violence charges on their records. (The United States War on Drugs, n.d) Are criminalization and harsh punitive measures against these nonviolent offenders the root source of our overcrowded prison systems?…
Foreign policies have gone from a model of prohibition to decriminalization. The European and Latin American focus has been on prevention, education, and treatment rather than zero-tolerance policy. Five years ago 25 political leaders from across the world came together to form The Global Commission on Drug Policy. The approach steers away from prohibition. It advocates for policies that put public health, community safety, and human rights and development at the center.…
The negative will now prove the treating of abuse of illigal drugs should be a matter of criminal justice because first of all the absense of punishment will lead to an idea of acceptance among drug users. Secondly, locking up drug abusers is an effective way to keep them from harming civilians. Thirdly, the only way a drug abuser can quit is only if they want help and want change themselves. This issue adresses not only the U.S but also the rest of the world…
According to the Association of the Chiefs of Police, drug use in this country kills thousands of Americans (United States. Drug Enforcement Administration, 2010, p. 3). The efforts in some states to legalize these drugs are doing more harm than good (United States. Drug Enforcement Administration, 2010, p. 3). They believe that the states are misleading the public and the real impact and harm the drug use will have on their communities, in fact by legalizing drugs, it does not stop the violence or crime in their communities or reduce the day to day threat that our law enforcement faces out on the streets of our towns and cities (United States.…
First, I believe the rest of the United States should fully decriminalize and legalize marijuana. Secondly, Portugal’s drug policy seems to cut crime and reduce harm done. However, the drug use rate has not fallen. It just enables the drug addicts to continue the same lifestyle.…
Imprisonment has a very little effect on combating drug abuse. ” reatment like regular meetings, drug screenings that come with drug court are much more intrusive for the participates than a short prision sentence will ever be. While in prison you are locked in a cell often with very bad influences causing the drug problem to escalate into bigger problems. “We find no evidence that imprisonment reduces the likelihood of recidivism. Instead, we find compelling evidence that offenders who are sentenced to prison have higher rates of recidivism.…
Taking hard drugs slowly kills the mind and the body. For example with cocaine, short term hallucinations over time can lead to having a stroke or death. Drugs take a large toll on the body and they could cause harm to people around a user of them. But unfortunately, because of our justice system, drugs occasionally drag innocent people into court. Even acquiring miniscule amounts of drugs can ruin lives.…
With almost half of all incarcerated people in prisons being drug offenders, this policy would have a huge impact. It has been found that treatment through rehabilitation is far more effective in stopping recidivism and drug use than traditional prison sentencing2. In Portugal, a similar policy has been enacted since 2001, absolute drug use has declined, as well as drug-related mortalities…
Violence related to drugs, and incarceration on the rise in the United States, and this is well known. What is not well known, however, is alternatives to a war on drugs that work. The nation of Portugal has decriminalized all drugs. One can legally possess one gram of heroin, two grams of cocaine, twenty-five grams of marijuana leaves or five grams of hashish (that is, arabic marijuana), for example. Using the drugs in public areas is nothing more than a misdemeanor and a fine, similar to that of a parking ticket (This Policy is Working 1).…
