In the 1920’s the government passed a prohibition law making it illegal to manufacture, sell and transport liquor, in an effort to improve moral behavior among the population. This resulted in the illegal manufacturing of alcohol, which led to the rise of organized crime through bootlegging. This historical cause and effect also applies to marijuana. Prohibition of marijuana has resulted in organized crime. Just like legalizing alcohol eliminated the bootlegging industry, legalizing marijuana would also eliminate the need for it to be grown and sold illegally, therefore eliminating the majority of the criminal activity involved in growing and selling marijuana. …show more content…
The United States had a budget deficit of $485 billion in 2014 (Non-partisan Analysis). Since our government is not able to tax something that is sold illegally, legalizing marijuana would provide our government with a new source of revenue that would aide in reducing that deficit. Additionally, legalizing marijuana would eliminate the government’s expenses surrounding the processing of criminals associated with marijuana
