Legalize Marijuana Essay

For many decades’ marijuana has been a very popular recreational drug for a considerable amount of the population. Just recently the push to legalize marijuana has increased more than ever and state governments are being faced with the decision: to legalize or not legalize marijuana. To date, the states that have made the decision to legalize weed include, Washington, Colorado, Oregon, and Alaska. With seemingly more states to follow, this movement could potentially snowball and result in a change in the federal law in the not too distant future. This plant contains many different cannabinoids with the main one being tetrahydrocannabinols or THC. This chemical is responsible for the psychoactive high that it gives its user (Barinaga). Another well-known cannabinoid found in the plant is cannabidiol, or CBD. Unlike THC, CBD is found to have a cancelling effect on the psychological effect of the THC. Recreational users prefer marijuana with higher amounts of THC with lower levels of CBD (“Learn About Marijuana: Science Based Information for the Public”). Though only four states have legalized marijuana for recreational use, there are 21 other states that allow it for medicinal purposes. Medicinal marijuana can be used to treat pain, nausea, epilepsy, and many other illnesses. A type of marijuana called Charlotte’s Web is high in CBD with trace amounts of THC, which makes it safer for young children to take (CNN). It is clearly seen that marijuana is desired for all ages, and for many different purposes. Legalizing marijuana would make it easier to access for the people who need and want it, and would bring many other positives along with
